NEed some advice on this as am not sure how to proceed. I have just received a letter from AMEX saying I have not been approved for the card. This was my second attempt and this time I applied for a card requiring only a 20k annual salary requirement. All other details I have put in are fine and I have been living at my address for some years now (more than 5). Has anyone else had similar problems ? What did you do ?

At the moment all I can do is write to appeals but I want a solid case and hit the nail on the head where I can.

thanks in advance.

Consumer borrowing is being seriously hit the moment so they are being more 'fussy' than normal due to the global credit crisis which spawned from crazy mortgage lending in the USA.

Why an amex card? I have one and barely use it as they arent widely accepted.

Get an MBNA card. they are given out to anyone.

True but my first application was made before the sub-prime lending issues. That was rejected too ... they dont even tell me whats wrong so I can send in proof against it !

lol that was a typo ... fixed it now.

Alfonse hit the nail on the head

Its being seriously hit and its only going to get worse in the short term ... My advice to you would be to refrain from applying again and tarnishing your credit by having several refusals in a reasonably short time span especially given current market conditions

How far apart were the applications? Most CC companies require at least 6 months between applications for some reason.

My advice is to use the free 30 day Experian report - excellent to see if you are linked to family members financially or to your property perhaps...

Hold! If you're going to do that, go via Quidco ;-) (assuming they still give cashback on it)

There you go : http://www.quidco.com/free-experian-credit-report/

£7 cashback for asking for your credit report:thumbsup:

Just accept it. When I applied for Sony credit card, my application was rejected. Then next day I applied for Sainsbury Platinum and got immediate approval.
Actually, I have a history of weird credit applications. When I bought my first car in this country my application for interest free credit was instantly approved (I was here for only 2 weeks!). Then, after a couple of months, when I needed to buy a new fridge, the shop I bought it from had an interest free credit offer, so I tried to get it. And it was rejected.
I don't quite get a logic behind it... It is much easier to get car out of country and sell it abroad then to do the same with a fridge :)

Same thing was with Argos card - my application was rejected but when I applied for Debenhams Gold card on a same day, it was accepted.

I never understood logic behind credit acceptance decisions, TBH.

Cashback on free? I think I had to pay £5.99 for the report but definately worth it. Formally disassociated with my parents (who completely fudged my credit) and everything is fine... I have credit coming out of my ears now!

Hi Cyrus

You might want to check out this link - full of very useful information

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/banking/credit-rating-credit-score

Including how to get a free credit report.

Oh ^^ i see you've been pointed to Experian too

In case youre not aware of this, different companies use different agencies (Experian, Equifax, CallCredit) which may explain why you may end up getting refused by Amex but getting accepted with MBNA

They usually also have an internal rating system which is proprietary to them - over which unfortunately you have no control over

Hope this info helps

I'm the other way round, I know I could get an Argos card but not a Debenhams card, quite simply because GE Capital (who do the Debs card) hate me for all time

Hi there
Lloyds TSB do the American Express Card too - its the easier way to get one, they have refused us in the past (AMEX) but the Lloyds one is easy to get it also gives you a free flight (1,500) miles I think it is if you apply and spend £10 before the end of April, its a really good card because it earns you airmiles every time you use it, I have had one for myself (+ free flight) and one for my husband (+ free flight) recently and was really surprised that it was an American Express, the also sent me a normal mastercard in case I was at a place that American Express was not used. Mine was applied for a little over a month ago and took approx 5 days to come. Good Luck

Donkey's years ago my OH was also refused an AMEX card.He got a letter stating that he didn't meet their customer profile!!!(wtf....probably not a posh enough postcode!)

That's fine,we will take our business elsewhere:p

Amex is different, its not a credit card it's a charge card this means the general rule is your balance has to be cleared every month, so their more strigent with their acceptances. I got the invitation only one years ago but rarely use it. It's more of a status symbol than anything else. Plus the yearly fee can be expensive. The reason it isn't so widely accepted is because Amex charge merchants in the region of 4% for its facilities whilst Visa and Mastercard is usually 1.6%.

As for your rejection, most companies rely more on precedent that actual financial status, the general rule is if they find that you've had a credit application rejected within the last 6-9 months (they find this out during the credit check process) they automatically reject u regardless. Also its generaly a good idea to ask for your credit report regularly and when you've had credit refused, just to make sure you haven't overlooked something, you can order from Experian or Equifax the two major credit checking companies for about £2.

Good Luck

I know but most people don't realise and applications are generaly for charge card by default.

One thing I do know about the Amex application system is that it is very stringent - one of the major mortgage lenders in the UK uses the fact that an applicant holds an Amex as one of the componants in their credit scoring for mortgage facilities! - it's taken that if you have passed the application for Amex, you are already in high regard in respect of credit-worthyness!
#23
thanks guys.

My applications were about 4 months apart. Thing is, the company I work for has offered to pay the annual fee of £300 for an AMEX Platinum but AMEX are not approving me !! That is why I tried again as I need that amex platinum as there are a lot of expenses while travelling.

The funny thing is my mum has an AMEX and she lives at the same address so I do not see what the issue is.

I'll stop applying to AMEX though. I guess a no is no and I dont want to tarnish my credability.

I will give Lloyds a try though ...

As you can't get an AMEX card by yourself, how about asking your mum to add you to her account and get her to raise her credit card limit so you can get an AMEX card. Just make sure you pay her back! Yes it probably won't be a Platinum but at least you'll be getting a cashback card which will reduce the amount your mum needs to spend per year (to avoid paying the annual fee) as you will be spending for work. Plus, your mum will benefit from getting a higher cashback sum (unless you don't want to share this)! ;-)

If you are still looking for a cashback card then go here Credit Card Reward Schemes: Find the very best payers.

Rewards Checker

I know you don't want to damage your credit rating by appling for more cards but just have a browse before going to Lloyds.

thanks hukdhunter

My mum has also suggested this so I guess this is the sensible option to take now. I wont apply for any other cards, just be additional on her card so that I use a CASHBACK card.

Yep - thats why I applied for the amex card as it has 5% cashback.

trouble is I havent come across one online store that I have purchased from that accepts it :?
#27
yeh thats another issue isnt it ... not everyone accepts amex . well its not as widely accepted as visa and mastercard.

Good news !! I applied for the BMI MBNA american express and got it with a limit of 8k. I think that's a bit of a result considering I was rejected twice from american express in the past.

I am planning to use this quite a bit, for credibility purposes, and then upgrade if I can.

Can anyone tell me :-

* The dos and donts, if any, now that I have an american express.
* What and when the best next step would be to upgrade. I am working my way towards getting a platinum but know this will not happen very soon !

Thanks

I believe, (this was told to me sometime back) - if you should ever fall into the psition of having your card taken off you or you simply don't want it anymore, then Amex won't deal with you again!
Not sure how true this was, it was told to me by a friend who's ex-wife had run up big debts (albeit in her name on the joint card) - the result being that although fully repaid, the card was withdrawn and he could never re-apply.....

Why are you so keen to get a platinum card? Hardly any benefits over any other card and every tom disk & harry as one these day.

The only prestigious amex card these days is the Amex Black Card.
#31
There are quite a few benefits for getting the platinum car via work, who pay for the fees etc. It's well worth while getting it then ...
#32
I have an Amex platinum card, and apart from the 5% cashback for the first 3 months (1.5% thereafter), there aren't any other major differences to other cards, apart from the card not being accepted widely!

The company i work for give benefits to employees with amex platinum. I dont know if they are affiliated in any way but thats the main reason I want the amex plat.
