Hey all, this one has got me stuck. I have just upgraded to windows 7, but I had the same issue in Vista.

I have a thousand photos roughly in a folder, and I like to see them in date taken order when I open the folder.

Now, sometimes, windows remembers the setting, but every time I open it takes about half a minute for windows to sort them before I can start looking at them.

Is there a way for this to be the standard across the computer? So windows actually sorts files by dates etc and remember it!!?!?

Any help appreciated.

try this
at the top of the pictures folder, where you will see
Name Size Type etc
right click on any one of those, and click More.
Then scroll down and check Date Taken and press OK
This should add a Date Taken option, which you can sort by clicking on. Windows should now remember to open this folder with this setting everytime, unless you change it by pressing another one of the tabs such as Name etc.
Hope this helps.

The problem occurs if you sort that way as well, the PC seems to remember the way it's mean to sort them but reorders them each time it's opened. I have the same problem on one of my PCs but never looked into any solutions admittedly.

Thanks for your reply, I have done this, and it wont remember the option I ticked.

And annoyingly in Windows 7, you have Libraries and The actual folders to do the same thing to. Very annoying.

In Vista, when you set as you want.
Organize
Folder and search options

My camera software puts each day's photos into a folder labelled for eg 22102009, when I sort in date order in Vista it mixes up the years so I have say 21102008 then 22102009 then 23102008 24102009! Is there any way to correct this other than rename everything with the year first?

Sorry for jumping onboard your thread op!

If the date/time was set correctly on your camera then you can sort by the 'date taken' field instead, this will use the capture date on the photos rather than the filename.

Sorry :(
I sort one of my folders with date modified, and it seems to remember this each time i open the folder so thought it was worth a shot.
