RENAULT SCENIC RECALL

Got a letter a few weeks back to bring car in for a computer update, apparently have been some problems with handbrakes. Job done 2 weeks ago.

Saturday night, slowing down near traffic lights and parking brake light came on, came to a stop. Very loud noise from back of the car. Restarted engine but car would not move, the handbrake was on permanently.

Eventually got the car to the Renault garage. Today they tell me the handbrake computer needs replacing....approx £650.

Sorry but just tooo much of a coincidence. Dispute begins

Any advice appreciated as ever guys.

Sounds well dodgy doesn't it, problem is proving it though. Good luck. Seems you suffered from the very thing the fix was meant to cure. At least it didn't come on at speed which is why they were recalling them in the first place.
#2
that sounds terrible

if you have a receipt I don't see why it cannot be taken up because the car was obviously operation correctly till the update I believe renault sould have to fork out for a dodgy software update. If it new there bound to be warrenty ?

I would contact consumer direct. I would also get a quote from another garage. Main dealers are more expensive. I will get you a link. You could also contact trading standards. You will need to contact youre locall council and ask for the department.

Have you talked to them about the fact you've had the car in for a related repair recently?

If you're having problems with them, I'd suggest you call Renault UK and advise them of the dealer's actions.

Have a read of this...
I have had 2 years of bankache with this thing they call a car, it’s just one problem after another after another after another. The latest one was due to the safety recall on the electronic handbrake, they (Ren-Oh!) couldn’t download the new software for the recall due to faulty handbrake computer which I had to pay for, so after arguing with customer services for two weeks I eventually only got a 25% discount which brought it down to £423. and now we have the illusive check injection warning when I hit between 2500 and 3000 revs usually when trying to overtake, when it cuts back and you have to abandon the manouvre. So thank you Ren-Oh! for ruining my kids summer (no holiday) and a reduced Christmas, at least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask!!!

Looks like others have had similar problems.

I had my car in for the same recall a couple of months back, no problem yet.........................touch wood! Sorry It's no help but I would be disputing it

On 30/08/2010 i took my car into Renault for "Urgent Recall on Parking Brake" apparantley there was a cause for concern as some were pullin by themselves. So i took it in had it done, then 08/10/2010 my car decided to tell me "Parking Break Fault" wouldnt actually work the parking brake, so i took into local renault dealer who expected me to pay around the £80 mark for diagnostic check which i said hell no to, because they had recently had it in and it was a bit of a coincidence, so they did the check and rung me to tell me "Your motor has gone on the parking brake, to fix would cost £570" i was devestated. I questioned the recall and he was adamanet that it was nothing to do with this fault, as the recall was done via computer and my fault was mechanical.

I telephoned Renault UK, who were not very helpful, nor useful, they basically contacted the dealer and asked was the 2 related, the dealer said no, therefore Renault UK said no and no help offered, said i could of had the print out of the diagnostic to prove it was mechanical fault....Thats me lot!

purchased a Second Hand One via a Well Known Thought to be Trust Worthy and Reliable Renault Broker....Paid £190 for it, and also £7 delivery, to recieve it today, and have a mechanic i know fit it, well he takes my old one out, plugs my new one in only for the computer to say "Permanent Fault on Slope Sensor" "Permanent Fault on Motor" "Permanent Fault on Cable Linkage" and for it to be pi**ing out water out the cables.

I cannot believe this firm did not check the part was working before sending it out! I paid more for delivery to recieve it urgently, and i have just had to pay the mechanic £70 for basically taking my old one out and putting my old one back in.

Seriously im gonna cry...but not before i ring them tomorrow morning at 8am and rail road them, i would not like to be the person who answers the phone to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Renault = Problem

Never buy anything French.

Clearly a design fault on scenics. Have already complained to head office.

Will let you know how I get on

Contact BBC watchdog, they are bound to have other similar complaints recently about this...It won't get you the work done for free unless they feature your case on the program but it will make you feel better.

It may be a good idea for tinks missgem and igl to swop phone numbers by PM so you can hand watchdog a nice package to investigate....might help you get featured.

Contacted Watchdog, lets hope they respond. They did respond to my last concern, when the Window Regulator decided to have a mind of its own, Im telling you ive only had this car since march, and since then ive basically spent what ive paid for the car in faults! I will never ever buy another French car so long as i live! x

It really has nothing to do with being a french car though has it. You just seemed to have bought a duff car which is probably why it was being sold. Doesn't matter what make of car you have there will always be perfect examples and really bad examples of the same model.

Are you joking...Renault have the worst reputation of all manufactures for electrical faults as a part time car trader I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.
#16
^^ so Renault are the only French car maker then, didn't know that.

They stated they wouldn't buy another French car not Renault.

I was responding to this part of your post.

I would never buy another renault thats for sure, but as far as french goes, from what i read on here and on other websites, all french cars are poo! So you are telling me that myself, and Tink, and all the other people on the renault forums, have all just got bad luck in purchasing duff cars? I think not....bit of a pattern spreading if you ask me! The amount of electrical faults i have had with this car, which renault are fully aware of, as they appeared on watchdog etc, is not because i got a duff car, but its because renault are a load of c**p when it comes to making cars!

Watchdog OK for publicising problems to consumers and highlighting issues in case affects many more people. Watchdog look for the big trends and run with it.

As for fighting this, will deal with it myself and small claims court if they do not see sense. Hoping they will be reasonable and it won't come to that. Have hired a car while we wait to hear further.

Be interested in a mechanics view on ths.

You'll need at least one impartial experts report in a case lioke this for the SCC and some sort of Proof that they caused the fault.

Many thanks. My argument is that there is clearly a design fault here. The car is 5 yrs old and I would expect the handbrake computer to have a similar life expectancy as the car. Computer not reasonable quality...manufacturer problem, which they have admitted to because the cars were recalled.

this video is a perfect advert for not buying a Renault :) funny as it was at the renault world series

Got one.

Have come back to me and said..........

now going to cost £1, 250 because hanbrake cable worn out, caused wheels to seize. I can live with that, seems like wear and tear BUT this fault affected the computer and that is why the price has now doubled oO8)

Booked my sceinc in for its recall for next week and now im scared. I can't afford the prices all of you have been told they have to pay if handbrake is broke. How can they get away with this its clearly a fault which is why they have been recalled???? I live in the middle of nowhere and have a disabled Son I need my car but simply can not afford these prices. wondering now if I should cancel and take a chance x

Had a similar experience when Renault asked my boyfriend to bring in his Clio in as the safety catch on the bonnet was faulty and they wanted to replace it with an "unbreakable" one. Never had a problem with it but thought it was best to get it sorted out. They replaced it and then about a week later, the bonnet catch snapped.......

Took it back and they fixed it but I found it really odd that we had never had any problems until they replaced it with an unbreakable one.

Very similar problem , my 05 scenic was recalled for handbreak then about a month later got a flat battery and then 'check parking break' fault apeared . Took it back to Renault Manchester and refused to pay diagnostic charge . When I went to pick the car up they told me I needed a new battery but there was no problem with the break but would now have to hook it up to their computer diagnostics again after fitting a new battery to remove fault light which I would have to pay for !!!! I bought a new battery from local spares for a third the price Renault wanted then searched online and found out how to rmove the fault warning and have had no problems since.

I vowed never to buy a renault ever again after owning a clio. It is not just the reputation for having unreliable cars, its the fact their customer service is awful. Dont get me started on their parts / servicing department, if you can call it that

No please take your car for the recall, it is the safest thing to do. Bad luck, fortunately got it all sorted for much less than Renault wanted.

I was just very unfortunate. You have heard nothing from all the satisfied Renault customers who have had no problems since their recall which is probably the majority.

well i;m in the same boat as the otherperson who had a handbrake recall,Have had no bother with my car in 5 and half years until I took it into garage fro this software update ,drove it away then day later drove about 50 yards and car suddenly stopped with parking brake fault ,I got AA to tow me as they could not get car started ,I took it back to garage I aske dthem whta they done they said they never opened bonnet ,Which is a lie as i requested them not to do anything else to my car ,but low and behold they done a safety check and they noticed the top of dipstick was missing so how on earth did they know that without opening bonnet and plus they said my nsf tracker rod neede attention which i find strange as this is what failed on my mot and which i had repaired so in process of getting looked over ,anyway like i said no probs in 51/2 years until went into benfield renault in tyne & wear ,IGot phone call from them stating it is corroded wire attached to harness under battery which was causing my fan to operate then drain battery and Costs me £110.00 to fix , suspicious very something that was free to update actually costs me £110.00 ,I know times are hard so read into this what you want and renault uk are waste of time you go around in circles .I have also sent watchdog an email with my problem thinking about going to local newspaper also ,would appreciate if anyone else in north east have encountered similar probs with this matte.r on renault scenic

i would not have another i had a 57 reg scenic which i got shot of as soon as the warranty was up,i had 3 drivers side and 2 passenger side window regulators replaced,3 sets of ignition coils, the main console display panel replaced,1 new rear wheel hub replace as it had seized solid when the auto handbreak decided to come on at a set of traffic lights and wouldnt release and a sunroof that leaked even after 3 or 4 attempts at them fixing it......worst car i ever owned, but luckily for me this was all under warranty
