It takes normally 4 weeks, but at the moment due to high demand is taking longer (about 8 weeks), however the Post Office do a check and send service where they apparently garantee it in 2 weeks, but it costs, not sure how much.

Renewing costs £72 though...grr what a rip

damn!, we were thinking of going on holiday next week! to india

Mine only took 5 days last month using the check and send service (£7)

I am not sure if you can simply drive to London and get it same day any more, I dont think they do it.. They used to though so might be worth checking out if you can get to Liverpool that is.

If you go to the passport office they will give it to you on the same day, but it costs more

sent ours off through post office - received back within 5 days

Seems like it is faster than 2 weeks, however note that is the time they state on their site:

Passport applications sent via the Check & Send service are usually processed more quickly than standard postal applications. You can expect to receive your new passport in about two weeks. If however you are a first-time customer, you should allow up to six weeks for your passport to be issued. Applications sent via Check & Send are also much less likely to be returned and/or delayed because of queries.

This may be worth a go:

https://www.ips.gov.uk/epa1r1a/index.aspx?c=1

We will print the information you entered onto a paper application form. The pre-printed application form will then be returned to you by post for you to sign, date and return to IPS for processing. If we receive your online form before 5pm on any working day, we will aim to dispatch the pre-printed application form to you within 24 hours. Please note however, that during periods of peak demand it may take us longer to dispatch your pre-printed application form. It is only on receipt by the IPS that the fee is charged and the processing of the application begun.

That passport holder won't be going then :whistling:

If you're going to India you'll need at least 6 months left on the passport regardless.

So basically your relative won't be going on their current one to india at all.

Using the normal method it would never be processed in that timeframe. I just had to renew my littluns and was surprised it was back in under 2 weeks.

You can however pay extra to queue jump. Think its about £110 for same day. (or thereabouts)

ours returned within 5 days

Not at this time of year it won't. It's panic stations renewal time June/July :-D

I sent mine off 2 weeks ago via check and send and it still isn't back.

I took mine to Peterborough, they give you a number after checking everything and i just hung around there for a few hours and collected them same day

I wouldnt risk that, better off taking them to the passport office in person, its inconvenient and more pricey i know, but then if it means the difference of going on holiday or not, it makes sense to get it done this way
