Renewing tax disc online query

I have just received a renewal reminder for a tax disc as my current disc runs out on 31/1/10. I'm just wandering if I leave it till 1/2/10 to apply for one online, will I receive a tax disc that expires on 28/2/11 or will it still be 31/1/11 regardless of when I apply?

I've seen people leave it weeks after their tax disc has expired to apply for a new one and wonder if they actually gain a free month on their tax disc. Guess we don't receive automatic fines after all!

Okaydoke, might as well apply for it now then. Not as if my current account is earning much interest anyway!

Cheers, rep is on it's way.

Think you need to wait until 2 weeks before it runs out - might have changed this.

Yeah it has, I've been able to apply online for a new tax disc from the 5th of the expiring month for the past few years now.

It would still be the same... Delaying wouldn't make any difference.

This is correct... If its done before the 14th of the month, you'll lose one month as they would start it from the beginning of the month you apply (if that makes any sense!).

If you did it on the 1st Feb you'd technically be without tax for a few hours, so they could stiff you with a fine.

I wouldn't even leave it 'til the 31st Jan as if you do it online you'll only physically get it in the post a few days later.
The website says this:
I have not received the tax disc. Can I use the vehicle without the tax disc displayed?
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives.

but I'm sure it would not be fun arguing the toss if some ignorant scummer of a traffic warden has had you towed in the mean time...

You can apply for it from the 5th of the month and it starts from when you current disc expires. Not sure if this is just with the online applications as it doesnt say, just says "Do not apply for your tax disc before the 5th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start"

Yeah that's what I thought but other people are making out that I'll lose a month if I apply before the 14th of the month.

When I apply online now it says I will get 12 months tax from 1/2/10 so surely that means it will expire 31/1/11 so that is no loss?

you cannot apply before the 14th of the month in which the tax ends anyway

Wrong, tax disc is in the post.

Tax your vehicle online or by phone

You can tax your vehicle online or by phone if you:

* are the registered keeper of the vehicle and your name, address and any vehicle changes are updated at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
* have a ‘Vehicle Licence Application/Statutory Off Road Notification’ (V11 reminder) or Registration Certificate (V5C)
* have valid insurance covering the use of the vehicle on the day the tax disc comes into force
* have a valid MOT, Goods Vehicle or Passenger Service Vehicle (PSV) test (if needed) which is valid when the tax disc comes into force
* have a debit or credit card - a £2.50 service charge applies when using a credit card, there’s no charge for using a debit card
* have a valid DLA404 if you’re entitled to disability exemption

You can renew your tax any day from the fifth day of the month.

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.
