Reputation?

Just wondering what sort of reputation exists in our new format? So far I managed to understand that it goes like this:
1. "disabled reputation". Example - Admin
2. "off the scale". Example - myself :D
3. "on a distinguished road". Example - A-n-d-y.
4. "will become famous soon enough". Example - boxblu
5. "has a spectacular aura about". Example - MikeT
6. "is just really nice". Example - Emmajk42
7. "is a jewel in the rough". Example - rayman.

So... how does this correspond to "temperature reputation"? Is there a formulae? :)

Reputation is given to a post using the http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/images/custom_buttons/reputation.gif button near where the karma button used to be. I don't think it corresponds to temperature reputation at all, that's kept separate I think and then added when you vote for something.

I think "really nice" is actually above "jewel in the rough" because the really nice people have more blocks.

I'm not sure exactly what the groups are. It'd be good if we could customise them but I don't think we can. :(

Er... no. Both you (nice) and rayman (jewel) got 4 blocks.

I take it we loose all our "Karma" values and start afresh?
#4
AFAIU our karma was transferred to temperature reputation? Admin, can you comment please?

Well I had a decent amount of Karma, but my reputation is zero :(
#6
Kommunist is showing as "on a distinguished road" for me
#7
It was changed thanks to poppy10:)
#8
I think Admin is going to import all previous karma,
#9
Just noticed I've gone up to 5 green boxes, but I still am only really nice...? I thought that would have given me a new phrase...
#10
It's done by numbers not by blocks. Rayman has 4 and he's a jewel in the rough, and I have 4 and I'm really nice. I guess rayman is slightly lower than me... 3 blocks also seems to be a jewel in the rough, so they must overlap covering the high end of one block and the low end of the next.

;)

I wonder if Paul can edit them?? It'd be better than the "Matchstick", "Pilot Light" things we had for posts because this is ratings. I'd be a scorcher!!
#11
Yeah. I am confused too :) In my case it went up from none straight to 2 blocks but was "on a distinguished road". Then is was still 2 blocks and changed to "famous soon enough". Then it wend down to 1 block but still says "famous".?
Is there any consistency in it?
#12
Or... the boxes might just be reputation but the text could cover the other things such as deal hotness too. :?
#13
If someone gives you negative reputation, the scale will go down I think Kommunist, maybe you had someone click that :?

I like the way it is with seperate bars for reputation and temperature. If someone is very helpful but doesn't post deals, then it's good to be able to give reputation. With deals, people might only post them but not follow up. That doesn't mean the post shouldn't deserve something, so the temperature is right I think.

The amount of posts for matchstick to flamethrower is also right [I think :)].
#14
Oh, I didn't realise Admin had brought back the user levels again. I'm missing a lot of little things now and they are all coming back!! It feels like Christmas!!
#15
Hehe There's also RSS feeds on the front page!
#16
I just spotted that actually. :D

The reputation under usernames is just vB reputation. The full reputation is calculated from all deals posted etc. I'm waiting until people build up a bit before running that script though. Everyone has a default basic reputation for voting and such right now, once the script is running it will take into account things like forum reputation to set the master reputation which will effect the influence your vote has in voting as well as expired and spam.

Maybe I did not expressed myself clearly. I do not complain about negative feedback (although it would be interesting why someone decided to give it - sort of "say it in my face, dude" thing :)).
What I meant was that relationship between reputation in CP, boxes and temperature isn't clear. That's all I want to know.

Has karma been imported yet? Someone has given me a bad rating now and I have a nasty red square :cry::cry:
#20
OOOh I've never seen that one! What post did they give you it for?

I think Admin may not be importing the karma after all, but he will be running a script soon^^^ see a few posts above.
#21
I just looked back through your posts poppy10 and can't see a good reason for the person leaving negative reputation.

I'm sure it'll even back out soon.

Thank you! You are really nice :)
#25
NO! I'm a glamourous beacon of light!!!! Thanks!!!
#26
Oh.. it looks like increase/decrease in reputation also depends on who's clicking the button :)
#27
It certainly does. I have quite a weighty click I believe...! Users with no previous reputation cannot change rep until they receive some.
#28
As far as I can see, your click worth 101 points :o
#29
NO WAY!
#30
It was pretty heavy when you gave me some a while back. Any more and there'll be one of those explosions like in the Star Wars movie where they shoot at each other at the same time and fly backwards with the force (if that ever actually happens in Star Wars, lol!).
#31
LOL

By the way, I found that reputation thing here. Was reading up on a few things.

On one of the forums I visit, the amount of reputation given out was a small percentage of your total reputation plus your postcount divided by 500 plus the amount of months you've been a member. This meant rep went up exponentially, we kept this up until we hit the rep limit of 2.14 billion before the rep system was changed over.

Thanks for the info Johnmcl7 :) What did it change over too?
#34
I left the forum shortly after the change so I didn't find out exactly how it worked(I didn't agree with the way they were banning people for no reason), but from what I gathered the reputation amount given out was constant regardless of the amount of rep you had. This was because many people had massive amounts of rep mainly because they were popular around the forum rather than being particularly useful - since they had a large amount of reputation, when they neg repped someone it plunged them very deeply into the red which was never fair especially since a lot of the time the neg rep was uncalled for anyway.

Obviously that's not going to happen here, I think this is the only forum I've been to where the rep system actually works - the people that had good 'karma' on the old system seemed to be the people who were most helpful here.

You know what, you'll probably take the mick out of me now, i've never understood this reputation, temperature thingamajig, and using the 'User CP' in these forums. Even though i post on several forums i always browse through each section indivdually which is time consuming i know, err i feel incredibly dumb now.

Ducky just recently 5 minutes ago replied back to me on a different thread and said 'reputation added' and i just been searching for my reputation not knowing where i can find it. I just realised i got a couple of reputations so many thanks to whoever they are. I should start giving them out too and say thanks, least i can do to some of these fantastic deals i never buy

The more reputation you give / votes on deals you make the better the site will be in the long run. :) Just don't be too click-happy with it though, lol.

:D

I can see how that would ruin things Johnmcl7 and if I'm not careful with my trigger finger, I could make someone's reputation go up or down by three squares [so watch out TheManWithNoName ;)].

As ducky says, the more votes, posts and reputation everyone gives, the better it will even out in the long run.

I think it's working out well here, what with the software change over, Admin and programmers hard work behind the scenes. They've really done a great job with everything, making it as easy as possible for everyone to become involved and a part of the HotUKDeals community.:)

The reputation is a new feature of vbulletin - the idea is to try and introduce a mechanism to try and indicate how useful or helpful a member is. Without reputation, people usually relied on postcount as an indicator of a person's forum status which is obviously flawed because some people could just post lots of rubbish to get a high postcount (speaking generally, definitely not referring to this forum). However, reputation means you can increase a person's reputation if you think their post was helpful or you can decrease their reputation if their post was not helpful.

For example, if you thought this post was helpful (and this is just an example, I'm not begging for rep or anything like that) then you could click the scales and give me positive rep, writing in a comment. This would increase my rep 'score' and when I checked my user cp I would be able to see I had received positive reputation, your comment and also which thread and which post I had received the reputation for.

On the other hand, if you thought my post was deliberately unhelpful, spamming or similar you could click the reputation symbol again but this time give me negative rep. Again, when I check mny user cp I could see I had received negative reputation and for which post.

In theory this should encourage people to contribute positively and 'highlight' the people who are being more helpful around here. On the other hand, troublemakers or similar will get red dots as people mark them down for annoying posts.

The temperature system is different, instead of rating a user you're effectively rating how good a deal is with the overall goal being able to sort deals so people see the best deals first. If you read through a deal you think is particularly good then you can click it as being 'hot' so it's elevated and people coming onto the site after you are more likely to be drawn to the good deal. If you think it's a poor deal or not really worth it then you can click 'cool' so that it's less attention grabbing for people coming to the site after you. I like the idea because deals are often time limited, especially the really good ones so it allows you to see quickly which are the good deals and try and hop on them before they're gone!

Hope this is of some help to you,
John

I would agree with you there, this is a smooth running forum with a good community - it's great to see it being continually improved, there's nothing more frustrating than a good site being dragged down by lack of maintenance or updates which I've seen happen in other cases.

On the previous site the front page was limited only to staff to post on. This meant that members sometimes posted deals which never reached the front page, even though they were quite good.

Now everyone has a chance. :D
