Restoring an Ipod Touch firmware to an earlier release

Trying to restore my son's Ipod Touch from OS4 to 3.1.2 and I have followed the guides online.

However every time I download the firmware I want, it downloads and saves as a zip file and when iTunes goes looking for it it can't find it cos it's not a .ipsw file !!

Anybody got any ideas ?

Cheers

this is correct all you have to do is change the file extension from .zip to .ipsw, you might need to make sure that you have "hide extensions for known file types" unticked in c:\, tools, folder options, view
just search for it untick and then you will see the file extensions to enable you to change them
hope this helps
