Return Airlines ticket - Query

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to ask a question regarding a return journey ticket from Toronto to Heathrow in December. My mom is coming from Toronto and then going on to Singapore. Initially she had no plans to stop over in London but now she wants to.
Whenever I have tried to look for a one way ticket it seems to cost much more (nearly double) as compared to a return ticket in the same route.

My main question was - will it be illegal on my part to get a return ticket and use only one side of the ticket? Second question I have just noticed if I were to buy a ticket going Heathrow to Toronto and return - then the tickets are slightly cheaper as compared to the other way round. Now if I buy the ticket and no one actually goes from London to Toronto but my mom uses the return ticket - is there anyway she can be stopped in toronto and her ticket invalidated?

Any help would be really appreciated and reps added.

Thanks in advance.

The first part of the ticket needs to be the part you want to use. If she tries to use the second part, ie the return, without having first used the outward the airline will most probably class it as a 'no show' and cancel the whole booking when she didn't turn up for the outward. If you use the outward and not bother with the return, there isn't a lot they can do. Can't you change the original booking to build in a stopover?

Thanks a ton for that reply, thats exactly what I wanted to be answered. Unfortunately cant change the original bookings as they were one of those "extremely good value tickets" with a reputed airline.
Anyway thanks for that, rep added!
