I got back from uni and basically its Poo! The reviews on amazon etc agree, the menus suck, it refuses to record unless the machine is in standby, its really noisy.

Its been almost a year but do you think we are going to be able to take it back? Imho i dont know how a sales assistant could possibly recommend the hunk of junk sitting under my tv.

You'll do well now, although you could say it was still in warranty and has stopped recording unless in standby and it's not working as expected.

Thanks guys, i know its a long time but my parents got it from john lewis because of their returns policy. I will check their receipt and see how long their guarentee is (the online says 2 years atm).
Maybe use the classic "intermittent fault" line. lol.
I wouldnt normally do something like this but it really is terrible, so much so that they have only ever recorded about 5 things.

no chance I'm afraid.

If it still is under warranty use a little poetic license and just say it's stopped recording unless in stand by and has started making noises. You might be better off pretending these faults have only recently started than just saying it's woeful and has been for the past year.

but they would send it for repair and some charge £25+ if no fault is found plus return postage.

no offence but you have had the use of it for nearly a year and only now you feel its a problem - i know you say you've only just come back from uni but they seemed happy enough with it before you came - so no i dont think you should take it back for a refund because what you want to do is the reason why retailers keep putting their prices up - you are trying to scam them

give it a go with the intermittent thing... i have returned things that i thought were faulty but it ended up being another component in my computer and nothing came back.... so dont worry about the £25 charge....

i used to work in retail.... some products had higher rates of commission and obviously higher priced items you get more too...

but before you try returning try a frimware update?

I will look into the firmware see if something magical happens :) It would seem even the updated model of the player i have gets similar reviews though.

This is the thing, they didnt use it. They tried but the software was too confusing, they assumed when i got back i would call them stupid and tell them how to work it. I got back from uni and was like :?: this is complicated.

They way i see it is that if the person had sold us a quality machine in the first place then we wouldnt have this problem.

You should phone their customer service or email them in advance. This way you don't have to take the TV back only to stand and argue in the shop. I'm not sure how this will work though. If it's faulty they'll give you a new one of the same not sure if you could then ask for a different kind
