i got some off ebay for my sons birthday and they were a nightmare they just came on a sheet and you had to try and cut the circles out yourself,

but then my mum got some and they were pre cut and they were fantastic so i suppose it depends on which ones you buy

id imagine if you were getting a large one it would come precut and the top of your cake would need to be very flat as the paper isnt that durable

As above, keep it super flat and it'll look fab, otherwise really doesn't work well on lumpy bumps. I stuck mine on top of a fondant-iced sponge, super smooth and flat and it was ace. Sorry though, no pics!

Do you mean the one's off ebay? We should of used the bigger cake asda do really (_;) there ok but i think buy the time you bought the topper and the cake you can get a nicer ones pre made. There good though if your child is into something that's not commonly on cakes.

I bought the ones off ebay too and they were a nightmare to cut around , i did get a cake topper off ebay for my sons b/day cake that was actually done on icing rather than rice paper and was very good , so much easier to put on the cake .

The rice paper ones work fine on buttercream or fondant on cupcakes but for bigger cakes the icing ones are much better and easy to use if you follow the instructions.
Here's one for a Star Wars fan:
