You can buy road tax a few days before you want to to start so you can buy on the 28th to end april 2010.

Buy it on the 28th March, but to start on 1st April, then it will finish end of March 2010.
However, if you have it back-dated to March 09, it will run out Feb 2010.

That is what I was hoping for but I couldnt find any link or information to say for sure this would happen or is it up to the discretion of the Post Office

oh ok so if I was to buy it know I would want it to end 31st March 2010 otherwise it would expire at the end of Feb if I brought it 2 weeks ago, say. Is that right?

Depends when the current one expires, or whether the vehicle is subject to SORN (off road) at the moment.

You can pick up leaflets at the post office regarding road tax.

You will need to produce a current mot (if car is over 36 months of age), and a current certificate of insurance too. Although you can buy online now as mot's and insurance data are all held by big brother!

Try here http://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/index.jsp you can put in the reg' number and make of car and it will tell you when it's due, cost etc...

Use the vehicle enquiry option on the left.

It all depends on when your current tax runs out.
I'm assuming you have a car at the moment. Is that right?
If so, then you should have had a reminder telling you to renew your tax disc.
This will state when it is valid from and to.
I don't think you can just go into a post office and buy a tax disc without any other documents.

The car is SORN and I have valid MOT and insurance just thought that if I brought the Tax now and it expires in Feb then I am losing out on nearly a month tax but if I can get it for expire 31st March 2010 then it would be better! I dont have a renewal form but I have asked and the PO said that I will need to bring registration documents with me!

You can print one off from the net, you will be better off taxing it from the 1st of April, as you will lose the best part of March if you tax it now.

MOT and Insurance required at Post Office as well, as well as V5.

A tax disc????????

To answer the original post, if the car is on SORN if you tax it before 1st April the tax disc will expire end of Feb 2010, effectively it has cost you a full months taxation for just a few days. If the current tax disc expires 31st March 2009 then you could have bought tax any time from 5th March onwards for continuous taxation until 31st March 2010.
I have a motorbike that is on a SORN for the winter and I'm in the same position, I have to wait until 1st April to tax it for 6 months to end of September, if I do it 1st April before the tax expires end of August.

I asked at a PO and was told if it is currently taxed then I can buy the Tas disc 5 days before for expiry in March 2010 but if it is SORN then it will be two days before ie Monday but will have to wait and see tomorrow!

Thanks for all the reply guys!! rep left!
