Good hotel for a good price - depends on your own standards.
I would say use the usual searches for Expedia etc and look for a hotel in the area I have outlined in pink. We have stayed at a hotel in via Urbana which was OK. Hotels there are very convenient for the railway station and the airport bus, plus good city bus routes, can walk to the ancient sites and it's not as expensive as right in the centre. There's a couple of good pizzerias.
Don't get a hotel outside the city or you'll spend all your time getting in and out, also miss out on the evening passegiata!! We've also stayed at hotels near the Trevi which were awful and not so convenient.

stayed here last year, 5mins ish walk from colliseum, handy for buses, or short taxi ride to places of interest/nightlife, termini station about 15-20 min walk or on bus route if looking to save your legs

very very friendly asian family run, think only 6 rooms, think all ensuite, modest but clean and comfortable, we are staying here again in the new year, think we paid about £100 p/n in high season, half this for low season, simple croissant/juice/coffee breakfast included but we just nibbled and ate out later

we shared taxi from airport last time but fixed tarif has gone up again, not cheap!, next time we are going alone and will use terravision bus, think this about 8 euros each

thoroughly enjoyed our stay in rome and looking forward to the return trip, i would recommend this hotel although i appreciate it depends on what your budget is, what you normally book and what you expect for the money!

cheers

apf777's recommendation is on via Cavour - the right hand line of my pink area runs down it.

Airport bus is by far the cheapest way to do it - it drops off a couple of streets on the far side of Termini.

Depends on when you want to go and how long you're staying, but the Holiday Inn group are doing a two nights for the pric of one deal upto the end of March 2009.

The availability is a bit sporadic, but I've used it and got 4* rooms from less than 30 quid a night, try this link:

It does seem to work in two day chunks, so for example if you were going to stay for 4 days, you might have to do two bookings to get the discounted rate.

Thanx everyone, will let you know where we are staying in the near future!

I'm staying at the Prime Hotel Saint John which seems really central, reasonably priced and apparently 1km away from the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Has anyone had any experience of staying there in the past?

Any more recommendations? I need to book a hotel in Rome for the beginning of May, and prices are crazy over there so I want to be sure I'm staying somewhere that's worth the cost!

Im hoping to book Rome soon and the hotel that caught my eye was River Palace which is an expedia recommended hotel. Price im quoted is £73 per room inc b&b and its 4 stars, very central location - excellent reviews. Flights are my biggest concern, £250 for 2 adults return, bit steep :S
