root cancal/crown or have the tooth out....

sorry didnt know where to put this but one of my lower bottom teeth was broken off and i went to dentist and she said that she didnt think she could save it and it would be best to come out. It was planned for next wednesday and the dentist phoned yesterday so say sorry it couldnt be done as the dentist now has a course to go on all week. So i managed to get a appointment with another dentist this morning. This guy is telling me that after the xrays (which the other dentist did aswell) that he thinks its not as bad as it looks and he can do root canal treatment and porcelain bonded crown fitted. At the moment hes cleaned it out and put some filling on top for next friday. he said i can still have the tooth out if i really wanted.

the problem £586.00 , i can just about afford it and wonder whether its worth doing it as crowns can fall out and ive got to go and pay for it to be done again.

the tooth at the bottom about 4th in from the front so althoguh if i have it out it will be noticeable but not too bad, the difference probably is £400.00 . but then i keep watching all these programs where they say that try to keep your natural teeth if possible and it makes sense, can anyone comment on having a crown fitted and was it ok, didnt fall out etc and does that cost look normal!!

not sure if i'm even being rippe doff, shouldnt all dentist try to save the tooth if they can, and by doing so make more money, why would one say they cant and charge £70 to remove it and another say he can and want nearly £600, unless i end up going back in 6 months and he says it will have to come out anyway.

Hi,

I've got a couple of crowns and had 3 lots of root canal work done. One of which didn't work. I really understand your prediciment but if your other teeth are good, personally i'd just have it took out as the crown/root canal work may not take with you (poor teeth, too much infection, smoker, heavy drinker, blah, blah, blah).

I have one gold and one silver crown on each side at the back on the bottom, hate the gold one as it's really noticeable when I open my mouth, the silver one just looks like a filling so isn't as noticeable. I couldn't have white as they file away a lot of your natural tooth before putting it on and as I didn't have a lot of tooth there had to have metal. Thanks to drinking Ribena as a kid I have tons of fillings and poor teeth.

I paid private for my gold approx £400, luckily my own nhs dentist is really good and did the silver one £100. It wasn't an option for me to take the tooth out with the gold crown as it was the same side where the other crown didn't work so if this came out too i'd have had to have bl**dy false teeth (my nhs dentist recommend I go private for that one as the technology they had was better than what he had and as it was my dodgy side, I'd have a better chance of it working).

Needless to say stopped smoking and luckily the crown worked. Both are strong, no problems with them, it's just like have a filling done. I do worry though when I eat sticky sweets incase they pull out but touch wood have been great. What I will say is though, have it done on a Friday so you have chance to recover over the weekend, your face will swell so lots of ibrophen too.

Hope it helps x

go for the crown

got my first false tooth the other year and hate it, with a big lump of plastic stuck i your mouth for 1 tooth :(

other options would be a bridge
ir if you want to be flash with the cash get an implant (£1000 must go private)

just one thing the crown should be about £150, is the dentist making you go private???
not sure about the cost of root canal
but there is a limit to how much they can charge for a single course of treatment on the NHS and I didn’t think it was much over £330

I had the choice of tooth being taken out and root canal work but as i had had problems contantly with filling it i said take it out. my choice was a little bit easier as on nhs it was £29. I would suggest if you can, to keep the tooth!

I had a similar choice - take tooth out or root canal, I went for the root canal and it was painless (the tooth was already drilled and filled and the root was dead) It didn't work... so will be going back sometime in September to get it done again...

I've had root canal done on a tooth that was giving problems. The dentist wasn't sure which was one giving problems so he tapped the tooth and I just about jumped out the chair it was that painful. But once it was numbed - I didn't feel a thing.

I've also got a gold crown that was done about 15 years ago and never had any problems with it....

I had the exact same problem, ended up having the tooth removed, it's really not noticeable and I don't miss it.

Having had a similar experience I would say have the tooth out.

Yep get the tooth out,
Ive had root canal then crown on top.
Kept getting infected in the root, causing me pain.
Tooth took out 10 days ago... not happy though cos bits of the tooth was left in, so ive been picking out bits of left over tooth.... Now i have a jelly type infection cyst thing in my GUM which is bulging out. I wont go back to dentist though, this experience has put me off!!

Gargle with dispersible asprin.

Its an anti-inflamatory (due to it thinning your blood) and the asprin helps kill the pain too :-D

Thats if you are not allergic

root canals arent as bad as they seem, i had one done few years back

i was getting a crown on my tooth but now the rest has broken away, after the tooth has been sent to be made and all ops

but the price seems really high for it mine only cost £180 and then the other thing to consider is how strong is the tooth that is left?

Thanks for all the replies, jsut reading through them its seems a 50/50 split. its mroe the money for me, its alot but i could stretch to it. if it was closer to the front i wouldnt hesitate as it would be really noticable. its private practice you jsut cant get a NHS dentist round here i've been on lists for 5+ yrs then went private 3 yrs back because i have a filling that needed to be done. I've even struggled to get my kids in without going private and they have there first dentist visit at the end of september.

hmmm.. i might save the cash and go for a removal. its a shame because i just signed up to private medical insurance at work and they dont cover crown or root canal work!! bummer.

went for the tooth out in the end, had it done at 1030 this morning and thing is stll bleeding, it hurts more where the dentist injected me in the side of the mouth rather than the tooth being taken out.

Hope you feel better soon, go back to the dentist tomorrow, if it doesn't improve.

Nothing scorching for 24 hours :-D

I had root canal done when i 17 and then i got a crown put on, i didn't find it painfula nd find it was well worth it as my teeth looked horrible without it.

I didn't have to pay for mine as i was still at school but i would def recommend you to go for it.

don't rinse yer mouth out hard and avoid poking at the socket with yer tounge!!!

Had root canal when I was at school (had an argument with a road and my bike that killed my tooth) was the WORST experiance of my life. Luckily my dentist was great cos as a child I was terrified of dentisits but it took 4 visists over the space of 2 months as he couldn't push me too hard. The tooth is now crowned cos it was at the front and simply became darker as the years went on as it was dead. Looks fine now.

had my 4th along top tooth taken out earlier this year. was offered root cannal for that and laughed. Told the dentist to take it out and was in and out in under 15 minutes :) hardly hurt a bit
