Hey People

Have been using a D-LINK router to have wireless at home. However, recently I've noticed the coverage is quite poor. Certain areas in the house I can no longer get a steady connection but when near the router (in the same room) the connection is back on.

Also whenever I try to use WiFi on my iPhone it recognises the network and then its no longer displayed!

I have now connected the modem directly to the PC and the net is working fine (but quite slow) So guess the router is faulty? It does not even let me configure it when the router is plugged in?

Have tried resetting the router but then it doesn't let me go into configuration or to update firmware..

Any advice on this?

Thanks

Have you thought about using Home Plugs? I use these to overcome the dead areas in my house (3 floors).

Thanks for that! Will look into it.

The thing is it (the coverage) was fine earlier however only recently has this issue started lol

Are you with BT? I had a problem with wireless earlier today, but it is sorted now. I think that atmospherics causes problems to, but can't prove it.

Virgin Media! Not exactly the best company! But oh well lol

Thinking I may have to buy another router.....any offers out there?...Cheapest I've seen is on Play.com at the moment.

It could be that other houses near you are also using wireless routers which may be interfering with yours.
Depending on how big your house is, you can always put another access point to extend coverage or locate your current router in a more central point in your house.

What model of router is it?
as you may be able to use firmware from the DD-WRT Project with it (http://www.dd-wrt.com)

its a complete firmware replacement, which allows you to boost the wifi signal of a router. Check out the site they have a page where you can check the routers model to see if it is supported.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies.

Well it is a DIR-301 router.

The thing is there was a recent upgrade, which I've only got to know off now...I download the .bin file however it does not even let me access the page where I can configure the router!?

Really annoying lol..

well you cant flash with DD WRT, but the update sounds like where your problem is.
have you tryed accessing from another computer?

I reset it and then tried another ethernet cable (to connect) and now it works! lol

Is choosing SHARED as security type fine for the wireless network?

Thanks

I didn't get to upgrade the firmware....am thinking of doing it?

the router is most prob on the default channel
if others are using the same channel near by you will get problems

the fist and cheapest option is to change the wireless channel on the router

edit: just seen you cant get into the web config
as you have just reset it make sure that your using dhcp and not static as the ip address may have changed
http://192.168.0.1 user = admin and blank if i remember right and dont use ie7 as it has problems with some routers

No, if possible use WPA as WEP can be cracked.
