Hi folks,




i sent an apple laptop 2 years old £800 cost to my brother up north, worth now £500 on amazon.

Sent via rm special delivery 9weeks ago still "being processed through our network"


Now about to make a claim via rm, wondered what are people's thoughts/experiences with the whole claims process?c

Do they actually pay up? is it a lot of hassle? what sort of stuff do i need to provide? apparently, they refuse claims if its worded incorrectly?


Any tips as what not to include for a risk of it being rejected?

Would appreciate some advice for a successful claim.

I claimed for an item I sold on here.

I printed out the for sale thread and paypal transaction. I had proof of postage and sent that too. I filled in the claims form and sent it all off and had a cheque within 2-3 weeks. I kept a photocopy of everything I sent off but there were no additional enquiries they just sent me the cheque for the value of the item and my postage.

It's up to £500 as standard.


When you use Special Delivery™ 9.00am you can claim compensation up to £50 or the value of the item, whichever is the lower. If the item is more valuable you can buy additional compensation cover up for up to £2,500.

he never said he used special delivery 9am service .....just special delivery which covers you to £500


Covered for up to £500

When you use Special Delivery™ Next Day you can claim compensation up to £500 or the value of the item, whichever is the lower. If the item is more valuable you can buy additional compensation cover up to £2,500.

Compensation for loss or damage must be claimed in writing within 12 months of posting, you should include your proof of purchase receipt and evidence of the item’s value.

However, please note that from 1st December 2010, the time limit for claiming compensation for loss or damage to items will be reduced from 12 to 3 months for Special Delivery account customers. Any Special Delivery item posted before 1st December 2010 will still be covered by the 12 month claim period, items posted on and after 1st December 2010 will be subject to the new 3 month claim period.

This change only affects items posted by Special Delivery account customers, all Counter and Meter customers using Special Delivery will continue to have up to 12 months to submit a claim.

You can claim a fee refund for late delivery of your item in writing. You must do so within 14 days of posting. Remember to include your proof of purchase receipt.

guys i dont know which amount to claim for- actual cost? or current value?

and how do i go about proving the value

i claimed for a phone i sent using rmsd, it was insured for up to £500 but i did send it a while ago, i had hassle after hassle, initially they said they would need proof of what the content was!!
They basically refused to give me anything, this took about 2 months.
I then appealed the decision which goes to a manager in RM, they took about 1 month, and they came back and said no....
.... i then wrote to 'The Jugde' in the Sunday Mail (i think) and they said theres a company that regulates RM, i sent everything to them, they forced RM to hand over £400 to me!!
It was an absolute disgrace!
But i'm better now lol

look on the internet and get relevant prices to replace the item

Did you use the 9am service or standard next day (special).

Compensation rules and limits here for personal customers.

Blimey, got me thinking..... how on earth do i prove the contents? do rm expect us to take pics of the parcel b4 packing it up?

yes lets discuss how daft you must be to be asking how to claim through royal mail for a £500 quid laptop which was posted 9 weeks ago using a next day delivery service!!!

first port of call for anyone else ever finding themselves in this situation (however likely) is to ring the service provider ;)

DOH! .... didnt you care to think that ive already done that past 9weeks.

been calling rm every week first they blamed the weather, then backlog then xmas then new year etc

finally, this morning they tell me to put in a claim and hence the thread

moral of story never make assumptions

have you filled in the official 'my parcels not arrived' claim form, i see above that you've only got 12 weeks from the item being posted to make your claim!

all that i was told was to fill a claims form either from the post office or print one from the website

are you saying there's more than one form that needs to be filled?
