How about this tale? Postman knocks at the door at 10am to deliver some letters that won't fit in the box. I takes them by hand. In with the letters is a red card saying that an attempt was made at 9.20am to deliver parcels that I have been waiting for. WTF is the card doing in the possession of the postie, 40 mins later? And I certainly didn't hear a knock at the door at 9.20.
I phones up the sorting office at 11am and gets the usual drivel ... "sorry, no-one can take your call right now. Please try later".
So, in the absence of a telephone service, I trundles into town to pick up my parcels. I have no choice do I? "Sorry, the items won't be back until after 12". But the office closes at 12, I retort. I'm told that i'll have to wait until Monday then. I asked to complain and was spoken back to like a 5 year old child, as if I was being unreasonable in expecting my parcels to be available to collect on the day of 'delivery'.

No.1, I don't believe that a reasonable attempt was made to deliver my parcels.
No.2, I would expect an occasional human response when I call the sorting office.
No.3, It is my right to complain, WTF cares what the counter staff think of my attittude? He was rude, arrogant and disrespectful whilst I was nothing but polite. He albeit treat me like a moron for wanting to complain.
No.4, who else in the UK closes doors at 12 noon on a Saturday??

Where is the service? As I see it, it just isn't there.
There was a solid Q out the door at the sorting office. Just how many people received red cards today? It is my belief that no attempt was made to deliver my parcels. What is my next course of action please? I want compensation for my time, trouble and the downright disgraceful and disrespectful attitude displayed by the PO counter staff at Brentwood sorting office.
I'll tell you for certain, that I will not be making any more orders for stuff to be delivered by RM. I'll ask for a courier delivery, and failing that I will go elsewhere to place the order if I reasonably can. It just isn't worth the hassle. I want to complain right to the top this time. I'm sick of being treat like the muck on RMs shoes. CS are of no help at all.

I complain at least once a month to Postwatch, the most I have ever received from them is a book of first class stamps and the usual half hearted lame apology.
#2
to be honest, the royal mail service by me is fantastic. I prefer to have all my deliveries made by them rather than other couriers. We have a regular postman who obviously takes pride in his job.
#3
It's the same at York too, I received a book of stamps because I was always getting everyones else's mail with a number 35 on it! When I complained I got a book of stamps but I don't think that this makes up for getting peoples visa statements etc, I never looked in them but you know what one looks like when they come through your door. That sort of thing in my book should not happen, it's as bad as those cds that have gone missing which I am one of them on the list.

Sometimes a driver will attempt to deliver a parcel, and not get an answer. If he/she has no 'Red cards', they will ask the postman to post one for him if he sees him out on his round.

It puts the postman in an awkward position if the customer then answers the door, but what else can he do?

Your 'protest' will not make a blind bit of difference to them, but will cost you a pretty penny and a lot of inconvenience. :)

I agree with the saint... u are acting like the only person that is affected by poor service... wile i symphasis with this situation and agree it was terrible service excuse my opinon but you may haveto get off ure high horse on this 1.... i work as a go between with customers and customer customer services and constantly have ppl demandeing to go 'straight to the top' grow up there is customer services procedures put in place and if they deem it necessary to go to the top i am confident that they will take it futher.....

I agree a complaint is necessary but really what is 1 person making a fuss goin to do to a company that size????

Sorry, I'm not with you. Are you saying that I should not expect any more than the push off by an answer machine whenever I call the sorting office? Am I not entitled to be able to call to be told my parcels won't be there for collection? That's all I wanted to do, save a wasted trip into town.

Your whole reply makes you sound like an apologist for RM's inadaquacies if I am being truthful, whilst making the customer sound like a mere inconvenience.

If no-one complained, the RM would just continue to get worse.

If they were queues out of the door, that kind of explains why the phone went unanswered does it not?

The card should have had a time when the parcel would be ready for collection, if it did not have this time, this should be your first complaint when you speak to Adam Crozier

YEs i agree fair enough my advice is to gop through the proper procedures ie customer services rather tha 'going straight to the top'

This sounds so typical of the Royal Mail, they are useless in my opinion.

Trust me I worked there years ago and I saw first hand the kind of lazy, bone idle thick people that worked there.

Our postie is useless, things sent by recorded delivery are posted through the letter box with no signature, parcels are left on the doorstep or in the garden. I've complained til I'm blue in the face but the same **** still goes on, it's pathetic and they charge you a fortune to use their poor service.

I once had a notice left for a parcel on a Saturday morning saying to wait 3 hours so I waited, clearly on the card it said the sorting office was open until 2.30, got there at 1.30 and it was shut, closes at 12.30 ffs!!

Also I was left a notice for my 3 monthly specsavers contact lenses that are always posted to me, went to pick it up and they said the postman couldn't fit it through the letterbox...ffs it's the same size it always has been and has never been any different.

You have to question an organisation whose aptitude test involves a diagram of a row of houses with chimneys, one has smoke coming out of it, the question is...which house is occupied? And it's multiple choice ffs!!

Another question involved a diagram of a bicycle, an arrow showing the pedals moving clockwise and asking which way would the wheels turn???!! I mean ffs, this was real I sat that test and was insulted by it. I guess you maybe have to fail it to work for them.

correct.

We as a whole need to complain more about any bad service that we get.
Always better to do it in writing otherwise it's more then likely to be ignored.

I have received a shocking service from RM in the area of Glasgow I moved to in the East End. Where I used to live the service was fantastic and their opening hours were actually good, the new one shuts at 12:15 every day apart from Saturday when it's 12:30.

Where I live now I continually get red-cards saying that something was delivered the day before and then when I go to collect it that day I'm told it's not there and to phone back the day after. Now if they tried to deliver the day before there's no reason it shouldn't be there, is there? I've also had red-cards through the door saying it was delivered the day before when there's no way it possibly could have been, i.e. it was dispatched the day they say they tried to deliver it! Funnily enough the depot manager had no explanation for that one!

In the last two years I've had 9 cards partially (or fully) opened to see if there was money in them, I've had 6 red-cards left for items that have then 'disappeared' when I go to the depot and have never been found. I've had 2 Recorded Delivery items that have said signed-for online when I've tracked them and then found a red-card waiting. Only one of them was actually in the depot when I went there, the second one was 'missing'. I've also had some online rental DVDs delivered a couple of days late and opened, i.e. someone has actually watched them. I've almost given up complaining as all I get is a woolly reassurance from Royal Mail that they've spoken to the depot manager and it will not happen again, utter rubbish as it continues to do so and there seems nothing they can do to stop it!

I know there are lots of decent people working in RM, but it's the few that really spoil it for everyone. I've been polite to any of the people I've dealt with, but sometimes my patience is really tested!

Oh BTW, my latest '1st Class' delivery has actually taken 7 working days to get here, unbelievable!

I keep getting other peoples mail through the door, someone's TV license, someone's warranty for their sky box, someone's first direct account statement. The postie also leaves my parcels behind a wooden plank I have in my front garden without even leaving a red card although I think that was just a temp who did that. The regular postie does put a red card through door but then puts behind wooden plank. Oh then there's the items that get sent special delivery they always sign for those round here. I guess no one complains else they wouldn't keep doing it right?

Well, I have gone thru CS with my latest complaint. That is indeed the correct procedure.
I've stated that unless i'm compensated for my inconvenience and the downright rudeness of the sorting office staff, i'll take my complaint to Postwatch. If they can't provide an adaquate service on a Saturday, then they shouldn't bother even trying to provide a half assed one. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a skeleton service at the SO until 5.30 on a Saturday, especially on the telephones. Especially when the lack of that service involves waiting until Monday for your mail (as long as Tues on bank holidays!) That is no more than a BASIC level of customer service IMO.

Where I lived in Edinburgh I wasn't too keen on the service, as far as I can tell the postman wasn't sent out with parcels just the red cards I assume because it was a densely populated area. In the end I didn't bother waiting in for a parcel because it would never leave the depot, just had to wait for the red card and go to the depot the next day.

Where I am currently I have to say I've been quite pleased with the postal service, the postmen (or post people?) are usually friendly at the door. The dog tends to bark at 'the intruder' but they usually talk to him as well and give him a pet, when I had an item delivered last week while signing for the parcel the postie was petting the dog and gave him a biscuit. The depot is normally quiet and I usually don't have to wait long to get my items.

Thought I had finished reading this and then just had to add some things:
1) I get a pretty ok service from them
2) Scribbles - you have to remember that you are NOT the customer here - the sender of the parcel/post is actually the customer (?) since they paid the postage - you in turn paid them. In such cases I have always got straight onto my supplier and complained insisting on a refund of postage.
3) If we all did this, then suppliers would start to complain to Royal Mail and look for alternatives and we all know that can hurt RM into action.
4) Last, its a little sad if we think we cannot affect a service provider because they are too large - its often a little lateral thinking that makes the best result.

You are right, we can't affect the actions of big companies like RM as they are accountable to themselves alone it seems. However, we can but try.
I'm more annoyed than usual as I thought Amazon used 'Home delivery service', but in this case they used RM. HDS provide me with a flawless delivery service, friendly too, and at a convenient regular time (always around 5.45pm). Late, but predictable. Sometimes with RM I get mail at 1pm, other times at 8.50am, other times at 11.35am. In other words, I have not one bloody clue when my mail will turn up!
#23
I hate to add to this, but my experience of RM is also fairly bad at times.

A couple of weeks ago I had red card through the door when I was sitting in the front room. Couldn't catch the posty but he pushed it through the door and then ran. Guess he didn't want to carry it, but as it was special delivery had to cover his back....

I've also had 1st class take two weeks to arrive and recently sent something that didn't arrive at all.

Not good service and complaining doesn't get you anywhere

regards to quote 2.- until all post is received by the customers, the mail/post actually belongs to the Queen. the customer has handed over a item for which they no longer have control of, effectively making them the Queens as it is HER postal service. if you need to complain, i'm sure you know where she lives,
#25
Scribbles you are luck if your local royal mail office stays open until 12 on a Saturday mine closes at 0945. Postman doesn't appear until at least 1100 on a Saturday so if I am out no chance of collecting anything before Monday.

My neighbour works in my local office so handy, he brings all my parcels, recorded delivery stuff home for me if I've been out when the postman has called.

Get yourself a neighbour who works in your local office and that should solve the problem
#26
We avoid them like the plague as they just get it wrong time after time after time. Gave them another chance on the 27th to send two parcels, and just found out neither has arrived! Called to query and was told I have to leave it for 15 days in case they turn up. Deary deary me...what a complete bunch of amateurs they are!!!!!!!!

They put an elastic band round all my parcels, but the posties too lazy to take it off, most of them would fit through the letter box on there own, but because they've had an elastic band round holding them together they class them as too big!

as if a postie is gonna carry parcels around for the rest of the round rather than remove an elastic band and post them through lol

It's a common thing on other forums. People get neurotic about the idea of starting a new thread that's even slightly related to one that's been posted before, and will bump things from years ago, just so they don't "waste a new thread". 'tis insane.
