This has been posted before but just wanted to remind people ...
On Monday 6th April 2009 new prices will come in to effect.

Eg. The 1st Class Letter price will increase to 39p for stamp from 36p.

The 2nd Class Letter price will increase to 30p for stamp from 27p.

Royal Mail Special Delivery® Next Day will increase by 35p to £4.95 for mail up to 100g.

"The current price rises come at a time that complaints about delivery workers failing to obtain signatures are on the rise (again) and in a year when eBay is all about offering free P&P. Thus the Royal Snail are handing eBay a nice fee bonus as sellers shift postage costs into the item price. "

Royal Mail is under the threat of privatisation at the moment and with privatisation comes the risk of huge price increases, job loses and the end of the one price to any part of UK postal system (i.e at the moment you can post a letter to any part of the UK at the same cost irrelevent of the distance).

I hate price rises (on anything) as much as the next guy but this one I can understand and agree with, Royal Mail needs to 'balance the books' to show Gordon Brown that it it can be efficiant and is worth keeping in the Public sector.

I would blame the government (Labour and Conservative) for not investing in RM. Everyone seems to have forgotten the report from last year explaining why our postal service is facing an unprecedented financial crisis.
The report made clear that the chief cause of Royal Mail’s huge losses was Britain’s keenness to comply with three EU postal services directives, designed to end national postal monopolies by 2010 and to promote “cross-border” integration of the EU’s postal services. As a result Royal Mail had to surrender the most profitable part of its operations, when bulk business mailing was opened up to rival firms. It still has to deliver business mail, for a knock-down price of 14p an item, while the 19 companies that bid successfully for the business of collecting and sorting them cream off all the profits.
As far as I understand no other country in Europe has done this, indeed a number of countries are now distancing themselves from this.

Lenny210 explained part (a big part) of it in post #6, RM lose money for the letters they deliver 'the last mile' for other companys. For this to change involves increasing the prices

Why are people moaning? Well I remember we used to have two lots of post a day - once in the morning as I left for work, and a second around midday.

Now, I'm lucky to get any post before midday! When sending items in the post first class, it's now not uncommon to see it take two days when again, I remember first class was always assumed to be "next day" due to the performance of the Royal Mail that we were once proud of.

I know it's not the fault of the postie on the street, wheeling their bikes in all weather, but fat cats somewhere.

Just wondering

Whats the biggest price increase on a single stamp this time?

eg. large letter 1st, large letter 2nd, 1st, 2nd, or anything that doesn't have the price printed on it.
