Some young girl behind the counter told me today that my packet by 1st class recorded WASN'T covered in the event it didn't get to the other end and signed for safely. I said I thought there was a limit of around £30-40 which was fine as its only worth around a tenner. She said that related to the postage costs which I could claim back if it wasn't delivered, but I couldn't claim for the parcel itself. She said what I needed was "special delivery" which was £5.44. She also said it wasn't a recent rule change

She has it wrong, surely????

Shes wrong. As long as you got proof of postage your fine, you would need to prove the items cost.

Print this page off, take it in to the post office, show her then tell her manager that she is giving out false information. Jeeze its not rocket science, so she shouldnt be doing the job if she doesn't know the rules.

Usually my PO are great,a few weeks ago i sold a blind.

I checked the postage before i sold it and double checked it again before i went to the PO that it could be sent standard parcels.

He told me it was too long,as items were supposed to fit into the mail bags they send them off in,told me it must be 1 metre when i knew it was1.5 metres.

I ignored him and sent it SP and it arrived fine, his suggested method of posting was 2 quid more:roll:

Even if you send with a first class stamp, your covered for £39 + cost of postage.
Though you have to get proof of postage everytime.

I have found this in the last few weeks, especially, but also over the last few months too.

"Due to the postal strikes...", the counter staff keep telling me that, "...we cannot guarantee Recorded or Standard Mail will reach the destination in our usually quoted time".

They can, however, guarantee Special Delivery items reach their destination (for an increased fee).

I was at a counter just a few days ago (Friday) when the customer next to me was fed the same line & he eventually paid the extra to ensure the letter he wanted to send by Recorded (Signed For) Delivery reached the destination by Wednesday.

It should have got there in 1-3 working days anyway.

It is like they are blackmailing the whole country; although that kind of mail does get delivered without the thieves in the organisation ripping open Recorded (Signed For) Mail envelopes & stealing the contents (as I experienced in August).

I also often find that correcting the counter staff about aspects of how the postal system works (fees, sizes, compensation amounts, and so on) is met with dissatisfaction.

Oddly enough it was on the last occasion I did this that the package I mentioned was ripped open.

Coincidence?

What the assistant said was definitely wrong (as others have said). But staff ARE being encouraged to push Special Delivery and are currently being Mystery Shopped about this!

Are you an egg donor?

edit: hu can't find it anymore but looks like it's changed to

"For stamped and metered items a postage refund plus compensation on the basis of actual loss, where evidence of posting and evidence of value can be provided. This compensation is subject to the maximum payable being the lower of the market value of the item and statutory maximum of 100 x 1st Class stamps at the first weight step.

Postage refund (a minimum payment of 6 x 1st Class letter stamps at the first weight step) shall be payable where only basic evidence is provided or the item is of no intrinsic value."

I don't like recorded delivery. This is why.

Most people don't realise quite how poor recorded delivery is. All it does is shows you (online) when your item has been delivered. More often than not (in my experience) they never bother to put the item as "delivered" on their website.

There is no extra insurance with Recorded Delivery compared with 1st class, and you can get free proof of postage with 1st class. You still have to wait 14 WORKING DAYS (which is about 3 weeks) to claim if the item is lost. With special delivery, you get tracking the whole journey of the item (including attempted delivery and redelivery). With recorded delivery, all you get is "delivered" or "come back later".

My conclusions (of course I leave you to make your own conclusions...) are that I use Special Delivery for anything that a) is valuble and b) needs to arrive on time. I use first class for everything else, including items which require proof of postage.

If somethings been lost how long do you have to claim for that item ? As I was told by the post office up to one year, is that right ?

PLUS it's a pain if you're out and it will fit through the letterbox BUT it needs to be signed for so you have to go get it or wait for re-delivery.

I really do hate RD
