I sent an item recorded delivery last week. The royal mail attempted to deliver it on the 29th but the chap receiving it was on holiday. He e-mailed me on Tuesday (4th) saying that the royal mail office had sent it back to me,are they not suppose to keep it at the office for a certain amount of time to be picked up and will i have to pay again for it to be delivered.

usually about a week before they send it back

It's a week.

The delivery office should keep the mail for seven calender days, so it seems that they have sent it back before they should have. so you could use this fact to argue for free postage. good luck with that.

What does it say when you try to do track and trace screen?

I think signed for items are kept for a minimum of 7 days before they are returned.
You can call 08457 740 740 for confirmation.

Depending on the nature of your item/correspondence, you can always get the recipient to pay for delivery if they didn't inform you that they were going to be away.
