Guess you are all getting as fed up as me with delays to post. Neither side in the dispute seems willing to give an inch, so it may be a long haul. The damage being done is significant. I know of 4 major companies who are terminating big contracts with Royal Mail, including Amazon. They tell me they have signed with an independent carrier.
I spoke to my postman yesterday and he explained that the basic postmans salary is pitiful - I agree, thats true. However, by working overtime they can significantly increase their take home pay. Now, like me you probably see the working week as 40-42 hours. A lot of postman get their daily rounds & office duties done in 4 or 5 hours. This means they can actually do a 25 hour week. Once finished for the day, they can then work overtime and get paid for it, even though they are already being paid for 40 hours and only working 25.
One of the bitterly contested issues is that management are now expecting them to cover the work of absent colleagues without payment of overtime. This would make a big difference to their overall pay. Unfortunately, RM workers seem to forget that in virtually every job, if there is absenteeism through sickness or holidays, those at work are expected to muck in and cover for them without additional payment. I do feel some sympathy with the situation the workers are in, but that is rapidly dwindling as time goes by. One of the other issues is job losses. Surely the union realise that if their action causes the loss of major RM contracts, the situation is just going to get worse. Whatever the outcome, we are the ones who will end up paying more for postage, and we are the ones that are sitting waiting for items to be delivered for days and days. I say lock Allan Leighton, his management Team and the CWU in a room until they see some common sense.

Tell me about it, i've had important missing documents, my gf's little boys birthday present not only didn't arrive in time but now he's gone on holiday without his beloved game that he's been dreaming about for several months (he's a huge pokemon fan).

I'm not too angry with some of the Royalmail staff, as some of them are very hard working but they need to find alternative routes to resolve the situation and without effecting everyone in the process, as they might eventually receive a little bit more money but we'll miss out on everything such as business contracts, birthday presents and ultimately, will have to cover there additional wage increases after the recent increase anyway.

I just hope the ones that steal items decide to leave, as one bulk shipment cost me several hundred pounds after a large percentage of items went missing and the employees expected me to recover this via the lousy insurance.

i think theyve had it too good for too long.

How do you mean 'i think theyve had it too good for too long'. The postmen are the ones that put the hard work in at the end of the process and get the most **** from people as they are the 'face' of royal mail. They work hard in all weathers and have to deal with a staggering amount of mail every day and most dont complain. I know this because i am one. I dont agree with this strike because it is doing more harm then good and I dont think there are ways of solving these efficiency savings that the royal mail want to bring in. As most people i would love a payrise but hey given to the fact that we have lost most of our contracts to other 'courier' companies who can charge less because they dont have the same legislation imposed on them as we do. We still deliver that mail after they have sorted it. I hope it getgs sorted soon because the customer who is the most important person is loosing out!! As to who has been having it good for so long i am not sure!!! The Postmen arent the only people who work in the royal mail!!

i can never understand why people have to give excuses like working in all weathers, more workload, etc etc

Ok then why should I suffer rude comments from fat hairy overweight postmen because I live in a block of flats and it takes me 2 minutes to get from my door to the front door of block I dont deserve to be shouted at(like what happened to me on Monday) and called lazy to my face as it took me 2 minutes and did I even want item.

Why has 15 or so parcels gone missing in the last 2 weeks, and cheques and postal orders and my bank card being used.

Im all for a raise but I dont like my things getting stolen and I dont deserve to be spoken rudely too.

I cant speak for every postman out there, i am aware that there are a lot that let us down which is a shame. Have you called your sorting office to complain, if so what did they say!

Forgot to say the cheques lost and postal order lost were cashed as well as my new bank card.

Plus they never ring my buzzer and just post slips through door claiming they came at 8am despite the cards not being pushed through letterbox till after 10am or 12.30am

At my last flat my postman was fantastic used to come to my door of flat personally and was polite and if he missed me and saw me in street he biked back up street if he saw me going into house to hand me mail.

It's only since I moved and the funny thing is I live 100 metres from main postal office and sorting office in town so theres no excuse.
