Guess you are all getting as fed up as me with delays to post. Neither side in the dispute seems willing to give an inch, so it may be a long haul. The damage being done is significant. I know of 4 major companies who are terminating big contracts with Royal Mail, including Amazon. They tell me they have signed with an independent carrier.
I spoke to my postman yesterday and he explained that the basic postmans salary is pitiful - I agree, thats true. However, by working overtime they can significantly increase their take home pay. Now, like me you probably see the working week as 40-42 hours. A lot of postman get their daily rounds & office duties done in 4 or 5 hours. This means they can actually do a 25 hour week. Once finished for the day, they can then work overtime and get paid for it, even though they are already being paid for 40 hours and only working 25.
One of the bitterly contested issues is that management are now expecting them to cover the work of absent colleagues without payment of overtime. This would make a big difference to their overall pay. Unfortunately, RM workers seem to forget that in virtually every job, if there is absenteeism through sickness or holidays, those at work are expected to muck in and cover for them without additional payment. I do feel some sympathy with the situation the workers are in, but that is rapidly dwindling as time goes by. One of the other issues is job losses. Surely the union realise that if their action causes the loss of major RM contracts, the situation is just going to get worse. Whatever the outcome, we are the ones who will end up paying more for postage, and we are the ones that are sitting waiting for items to be delivered for days and days. I say lock Allan Leighton, his management Team and the CWU in a room until they see some common sense.
