Running PSX games on a PSP

Hi all,

I haven't really felt compelled to buy a PSP but the thought of playing the likes of Final Fantasy 7, 8, MSG, Crash Bandicoot and all my fav PS1 classics in one portable bundle is appealing.

I understand there's software out there that'll make a PSX image bootable to be played on the PSP (along with already converted downloads, of course) but I'm wondering just how well they run on the PSP and whether there are glitches/crashes that make it not worth the effort. I'm especially concerned about the ability to play multi-disc games (like FF7) as I'd hate to run into problems booting the 2nd disc right after completing the first! If I recall I never got this far in the past. :)

I hear some games do crash and I'd hate to be half way through a big RPG only to find I can't go any further.

Can anyone give any info/opinions on this? Anyone out there use their PSP for this purpose?

I'm thinking if a PSP isn't perfect for PS1 emulation then I may invest in a PS2 with one of those (somewhat) portable TFT screens, or even a 'newer' PSOne.

Thanks

Yeah, but this post is just as valid as the "check the hot chick in this youtube vid" or "the word association game", we're in Misc afterall. I've done a fair bit of research on the psp scene the last day or so but I figure posting a question like this here may help out a lot of people who are after similar info. There are lots of gamers/modders on here that could benefit from this, and one hell of a lot of deals on here are for consoles.

No harm in asking here.

I think PS1 games are pointless, just play the PSP ones.

There are not enough buttons on the PSP to match the PS1 Controller, the graphics aren't as good as PSP either.

yes you can mate. you will have to convert the game and most likely run the custom firwmwire. There are some glitches in some games and if you look in the right place, they can be the full game collection.

Cheers, yeah I've done the research in firmware modding. :)

@jackthelad, hm I didn't really think of that (being less buttons than a ps1 controller), that a good point. I have a DS and think I'd just let the PSP collect dust as there's nothing that really stands out to me about it, other than the custom firmware allowing me to play ps1 games.

I think I'll pass on a PSP as I can't do button mapping. I've seen mods that let you use a regular controller with a PSP, but sod it that kinda defeats the purpose!

Thanks for the replies

:-D I have a PS1 believe it or not (an older one from about '98) and even original copies of FF7! I just feel an urge to play some games again but on a portable console. I see Cex sell TFT screens for £20. Hm... to blow some money on this or not?! Christ, now I have to look into modding those newer shaped psone's :whistling:

I run Gran turomiso on my psp, just copyed the folder to the game folder on the psp.
Works a treat.
Can resize the scren to fit the aspect.
Can remap the buttons alow in the configuration screen within the PSP game.
Haven't got FF games so don't know if any glichs, but don't see wly it wouldn't work.

Within the homebrew software can set to boot to that game (on image)

psx games work fine on a psp if they are encoded correctly but some games are not that great when you need to use all 4 shoulders buttons, they run from images so if FF7 has 3 disk that would be 3 images in your psp storage place
