I literally just booked flights with ryanair 30 minutes ago for £78. Then i found out my graduation is during this period so i tried to change them to the week after, where the total cost of new flights would be £72.

the fee ryan air want to change to these flights.... £70. + £10 admin fee

has anyone else experienced this or knows how to get around it?

No way around it.

If the original flight had a high proportion as taxes then it may be best to book flights new flights seperate and get refund on the tax mius an admin fee.

why can you potentially get the tax refunded? i think only £17 of it was tax?

Nothing you can do, write the money off and rebook. Or try get the bank to block the money going out.

Ryanair take payment on completion of booking so not possible to block the money

Yes tax is refundable but the other charges aren't. Although Ryanair do charge an admin fee for the tax refund but I'm not sure how much it is.

Coincidentally, at the same time you were booking your flights, I was reading a Daily Mail article on the new outrage which is the new bag fee, which is up to £80. They included a quick chart of all the excess charges, and changing your flight is indeed £35, which'll be where your £70 is coming in.

Personally, I think it's fair enough. But then, I have to, since I expect that there will soon be a "Badmouthing on internet forums" surcharge of £20 levvied against anyone saying otherwise. Per flight, per journey, per leg, etc...

the change fee is quite common on all airlines

the tax refund will only apply to TAX - not any ryanair fees, and if remember correctly the admin fee is exactly the same as the tax you can claim - so no point claiming it back.

You could try calling them, although this will be premium rate and expensive. I booked flights with Pacific Blue on the wrong dates, called them immediately and they credited us for alternative flights. However this was literally 5 minutes after booking, and - more importantly - NOT ryanair, but could be worth a shot.
