Ryanair mulls charge for toilets
Michael O'Leary: 'People might have to spend a pound to spend a penny'
Irish budget airline Ryanair has said it is considering charging passengers for using the toilet while flying.

Chief executive Michael O'Leary told the BBC that the Dublin-based carrier was looking at maybe installing a "coin slot on the toilet door".

Consumer group Which? said the airline was putting "profit before passengers".

Last week Ryanair confirmed it plans to close all of its airport check-in desks by the end of the year in a bid to reduce the cost of its flights.

'Fast buck'

Ryanair aims to offer low basic ticket prices, and then charge extra for items such as checking in at the airport or for additional luggage.

"One thing we have looked at in the past, and are looking at again, is the possibility of maybe putting a coin slot on the toilet door, so that people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny in future," he told BBC television.

He added: "I don't think there is anybody in history that has got on board a Ryanair aircraft with less than a pound."

But Rochelle Turner, Head of Research at Which? Holiday, said: "It seems Ryanair is prepared to plumb any depth to make a fast buck and, once again, is putting profit before the comfort of its customers.

"Charging people to go to the toilet might result in fewer people buying overpriced drinks on board, though - that would serve Ryanair right."

Should an in flight emergency occur life jackets and oxygen can be purchased from the cabin staff, as this is an emergency please have the correct amount available as change will not be given. A surcharge will be applied for all card payments with the obvious exception of the Ryan Air card.

H&S would probably not allow this. But I guess they could make you pay a deposit in case you used the equipment. Refundable against the next journey if the emergency equipment is unused :whistling:

If flying makes you nervous it could be a very expensive journey.

Very good :-D

Also I wonder whether they will hire a security guard to look after the toilet. Is not like people in the queue will be saying excuse me can you please close the door so I can put my pound now :p

Or I wonder whether they will put a timer. Please add another £1 or the door will unlock automatically in 5min :-D

I would guess that it is just a cheap publicity stunt by Ryanair, it made the BBC, so it worked.;-)

The quote was lifted from an interview he did this morning on BBC breakfast news, he was using it as an example of how they could bring the cost of flights down and recover the difference in descretionary charges rather than whacking up the fuel surcharge like everybody else does.

But surely for the wrong reasons... reading about this would make me want to travel by them even less!
#31
isnt it a legal requirement to have free toilet facilities in places where the consumer will be for more than 30 minutes? or did i just dream that up?
#32
It's just a bog standard publicity stunt.
They will quietly can the idea in a day or two and everybody will be relieved.
#33
What if you want to join the mile high club ? would that be £2 please ?
#34
Love the tags....
Just seen on channel 4 news that Michael O Leary may have been talking off the cuff.
Not going to happen
