Samsung announces 1.4GHz Exynos 4 Quad processor for 'next Galaxy smartphone'

Samsung apparently couldn't wait for its big 'Next Galaxy' announcement on May 3rd to give us details on the chip that will power it. Dubbed the "Exynos 4 Quad," the chip will run at 1.4GHz per core and is based on the ARM Cortex A9. Samsung is touting the 32nm High-k Metal Gate technology, power management, and per-core dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. Most importantly for those waiting for the Galaxy SIII, Samsung has also let loose that it will be used on the next Galaxy smartphone:

Had my 3GS for a couple years now, am holding out for this phone. Didn't have a Galaxy myself but had a play around on them a few times and they are amazing.

    Screen is 1280 * 720.

There numbers are taken from a system settings app, however it measures the app window size, the other 96 pixels make up the status bar.

Thanks, ill update info as i go along.

Alot of sites are also reporting a 12mp Camera.

I also thought that was pretty poor, they should win customers over with the quality of the product and not result to trying to belittle users of other phones. Being an iPhone user at the moment who is open minded to changing platform it annoyed me a little.

I see what you are saying, but to be honest the S2 was far superior to the iPhone 4 etc anyway. But i agree maybe they should have thought that through a little more :)

Anyway, regarding the camera, it seems it is going to be between 8-12MP, some apparent leaked shots have come out to play, but of course it is only speculation.

    Iphone 4 Release date 24 June 2010
    S2 Release date 1st May 2011
    Iphone 4S release date 14 October 2011

So i guess a more relevant comparison would be S2 vs Iphone 4s which there was very little in terms of spec difference between them.

Will be good to see S3 vs iPhone 5, im glad that there is some good competition in Smartphones now as it will keep them pushing the limits !

i really do hope it is a removable battery... then it gives us the option to increase the power of the battery

Samsung and others are considerably increasing the size of their phones because of the needed increase of the battery size.

But im with you, really hoping for a removable battery.

What do you think about the price also? ideally i want a PAYG but will probabaly be forced into a contract :(

Its comments like these that start the pathetic fanboi comment wars. Lets be serious i doubt there will be much difference in spec between iPhone 5 and the S3.

As for comments regarding battery life, having more Cores doesn't actually lead to greater power consumption. It can make the phone more efficient and can actually improve battery life. Each core works less hard to accomplish a task, it draws less battery power than if fewer cores strained with heavier workloads apiece. Obviously if you are working the phone to its max the battery will diminish quicker as the performance will be better but for everyday general use the battery should be better with the quad core.

The processor is particularly well-suited for heavy-load applications such as 3D games, video editing, and calculation-intensive simulation, according to Samsung. In addition, it has a video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back, it said.

But Samsung also had battery consumption in mind when designing the processor. Due to its low-power process and power-saving design, the Exynos 4 Quad "has two times the processing capability" of its dual-core predecessor "while consuming 20 percent less power," according to the company.

For example, the processor can switch off cores to lower power consumption when all the power isn't needed, Samsung said.
