EDGE can carry data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s
GPRS about 32–40 kbit/s
HSDPA gives 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbit/s

First 3 are data transmission protocols

GSM-1800 uses 1710–1785 MHz to send information from the mobile station to the base tranceiver station (uplink) and 1805–1880 MHz for the other direction - Used for voice and SMS

Or put another way:
GSM, GPRS = 2nd Generation
EDGE = 2.5nd Generation
HSDPA = 3rd Generation

HSDPA is technically 3.5th Gen, with 3G obviously being the 3rd Generation

Pretty much, GPRS and EDGE are fine for facebook apps/Twitter, and 3G and HSDPA are pretty much essential if you want to keep your sanity while loading a page

Thanks for the help
