Been looking at both of these phones and don't know which is the better as they can be both had for the same price. What is the difference and is the ultra model different aswell or are they all called ultra?

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

The u700 has a 3.2mp camera.

Both are Ultra models hence the U in the name.

The U700 is a 3G version of the U600

other than that very similar I would guesss

My U600 has a 3.2 mp camera as well

How much can you get them for?

My nephew had serious problems with the U600 screen cracking when the phone was just in his trouser pocket. Do a quick Google on 'U600 cracked screen' and there are lots of people out there had the same problem. It can cost £40-50 to replace and Samsung refuse to admit it's a design fault so are saying it's not covered by the warranty.

I was just offered one as a free Orange upgrade this week and said no thanks as I knew there were problems with it and just waiting for them to offer me some better phones.

Gte the U700 as it has 3g so has a higher re-sell value.

They can be had for £100

Thanks for all the comments. I am still undecided which to go for. Is the only difference then the fact that the 700 has 3g? Also does the 600 have a radio as it says it does on some sites but says no in the spec.

my U600 has a radio

Looks like the recon Orange U600 at £59.99 was a good buy then :-D

and its unlocked so running with my Virgin 300 / 300 £10 /months SIM card no problems

Next step is to flash it with the generic firmware and get rid of the nasty Orange stuff:whistling:

Would be interesting to know how to do this too?

What are your views on the phone then?
Can you add your own tones to your texts and stuff or are you stuck with the installed ones?

In general ist a great phone - very thin:)

The touch sensitive buttons are a bit sensitive but you get used to them. Apparantly the latest firmware allows you to set the sensitivity and also you can set the phone to vibrate when you touch a button :w00t:

Menus are really easy to navigate

My only "concern" is although it feels well made, the screen protectiion does feel shall we say vunerable and you do need to touch the screen to open the slider and as such if you were to press to hard the screen may crack. there is alot about U600 cracked screens on teh net.

As for firmware flashing see here

all you need is here

Just select U600 or U700 in the drop down in top left in orange coloured section

Go to the bottom of the list and all the files and instrictions are there

No

Download the last 3 i.e. (for U600)

U600 Optiflash (flashing program)
Samsung SGH-U600 flashing instructions (flashing instructions - read carefully and follow exactly)
Samsung SGH-U600 service manual (in case you want to take your new phone to bits !)

and this firmware

U600XXGK2

This is the latst U600 generic UK firmware from Nov 2007

there is also another tutorial about flashing your phone here

http://www.4shared.com/file/35716575/b1a34c46/HOW_TO_DUMP_AND_FLASH_U600_FIRMWARE_Rev1.html

and this also shows you how to dump the existing firmware first in order to protect your warranty. also uses optiflash

Thanks for the info you have posted and the links. I have read the instructions on what to do and it says
Browse to and select your *.s3 firmware file
but the files to download seem to be exe files.

I have downloaded the 3 files you mention and U600XXGK2 and it seems to be exe. Am i doing something wrong

i don't know, I have not tried it yet

But try just running the .exe file on your pc, it maybe a self extracting compressed file and thus reveal the real firmware file.

In general firmware files are not .exe files, so I would guess teh real file is hidden in the .exe file.

Just tried it and yes I was right

Just double click on the downloaded U600XXGK2.exe file and it opens an installation windows automatically with some foreign character - do not worry about this just let it instal and let it complete.

You will then have a folder on your c drive on your pc called C:\U600XXGK2 and low and behold in that folder is U600XXGK2.s3

Now you can flash your phone :-)

let me know if this is right - I am at work so cannot check it here as I do not have my data cable here

Yes thanks i have just checked it and it does extract to a firmware file. I don't have the phone yet so i can't check it, just wanted to know before i buy.

Flashed my U600 last night - worked fine

Now running generic Samsung firmware with a back up of the orange firmware in case it has to go back :-)

what operator did you get it from?

before you flash it wait for me to post again with better instructions - almost brick mine first time :w00t:

You can get the firmware version by keying in *#1234#

tell which firmware you have before you flash it

Got it from Carphone warehouse. I have just checked firmware using the code you posted and it is showing as U600BMSGL1

The guy in the shop told me it was sim free
#23
having had the u600 i would recommend to get the u700!

simply for the fact that a number of people i know got this phone on my advice and one in particular had to get a replacement 3 times because when they texted in predictive text the phone froze and reset its self

I cannot find any reference to this firmware on the internet

are you sure of the firmware, there appears to be one character too many

it should be in the form U600 then two letter for the region or operator then three character for the realease.

GL1 indicate it the first realease from Dec 2007 but the BMS bit is confussing

anyway its te latest firmware I have seen for this phone!

is the phone locked?

is there any branding on the phone when you start up or swtich off?

EliTom

Yes this is definatley the firmware that shows on the phone, i also thought it had too many digits.

The phone is not locked and it shows that samsung Fun club thing.

interesting ! No branding at all - must be generic Samsung, but it dioes not even have the normal western europe designation i.e. XX in the middle.

btw how much did you pay for it?

EliTom

Payed £120 but £20 of that was credit which was compulsary if paying by cash,
