Santander - Anyone with them?

I’ve been with Barclays for a looong time, decided to make a change (for a better offer). Not sure why i’ve stayed so long, just could never be arsed switching for the best deals.

Applied for the Santander 0% Preferred Overdraft account (Most recommended one on moneysavingexpert for an overdraft), giving me 12 months 0% interest. Also no fees. Good for me incase i want to dip in it.

Got approved today. Account has been setup.

Hows peoples experience with Santander in terms of transferring cash, do they use faster payment scheme for online banking transfers. As been googling, is a little murky on either they only do that over the telephone or have now added it to online banking aswell.

Also if anyone has any other comments on them, since i can turn back now before i let the account switch all go through.

Other half is with them and has nothing but bad things to say about them! Bank transfers take ages! 4/5 days!

From the Santander website about transfers...

"Please allow four working days for your payment to be received"

Ah right, cheers.

So looks like telephone is the only way they do faster payment scheme, as they are listed on their website.

The person who I look after has to pay money into his landladys account every 4 weeks. Every time we go in to do this there is a que of people moaning about the service and accounts. It was an A and L account before and we had no problems in there. The poor guy (same one every time we go in) looks as though hes going to have a breakdown. Hes really pleased to see us as we are the only ones that dont give him earache. I think they have to many acounts now and have heard friends saying they have set up DDs that have not come out, or have come out twice.

Maybe, although when she last tried to do that (as they hadn't completed a standing order payment for some reason) the chap on the phone said they couldn't do it by phone, only online! Why she stays with them i'll never know! :)

I've had no problems yet, A&L taken over by them, I now seem to have 2 parallel accounts A&L and Santander, they have different sort codes I can pay into, but still use the A&L card and cheque book to obtain cash.

But see:

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/savings-and-banking/article.html?in_article_id=517416&in_page_id=7

Go to the bottom of the article to see all the links to other problems.

I have A&L basic account (now Santander) and my BT payments are instant (online). I guess it all depends on what kind of bank accounts your transferring to...

I have no complaints with them

They show instantly on the Santander account but take ages to reach the receiving account. When I xfer from Natwest to Halifax it is instant (at both ends) when other half sends xfer from Santander to Halifax it shows instantly that it has gone out but 4 or 5 days to show at Halifax!

I can't really give you any experience of actually using Santander... as they didn't really give me a chance.

I had my Uni loan accounts with Bradford and Bingley, who were great. They were then taken over by Santander. I wanted to open another account with them, which I transferred a majority of my money into, as I was going to need to access it regularly as I had just finished Uni and my part time job and was looking for a full time job.

Santander requested my N/I number, which I said I would call up and provide when I got home, which was fine, and I did. I later got a letter from them asking again, so I phoned up and gave it them again. A few weeks later I went to withdraw money and I wasn't able to. A week after that I received a check for a few thousand, along with a letter saying they closed my account as I hadn't provided my NI number.

Even the Bradford and Bingley people were disgusted when I asked them if I could access money through them. I phoned Santander and they said there was nothing I could do, and it was just that the last person put it in wrong... so I was left without money for 3 weeks, plus an extra week with the cheque cashing.

Personally, I wouldn't trust my money with a company that would behave like that.

Instant transfers I perform are:

Nationwide
Natwest
HSBC

You could always check http://www.ukpayments.org.uk/sort_code_checker/ and see what it comes up with.

I would never ever ever ever ever ever ever recommend this bank to anyone!!!! My husband recently deposited money into their atm machine in an envelope with a payslip, it showed up in his account, then later on said it had reversed, i have spent the past 3 weeks on the phone, in the branch, they have apparantley investigated and cannot find any envelope, and if i want cctv to be checked to ring the police or council, in which i have and they have sed cctv street cameras is what they deal with, that branches have their own cctv on atm machines and therefore it is down to the branch to check this cctv. Had to contact the financial obudsman and this will now take 3-6 months! Absolute nightmare, i posted this on facebook and the amount of people i had comment on it was unbelievable all saying what a bad bank they are and that they have too been in the same situation once before! So i would NOT bank with these!

PS i have been with Halifax for 10 years now and i have to say by far they are the best bank ive ever come across, their online banking is so simple, and easy on the eye, so easy to transfer, and if you transfer to another halifax it goes in the same day, or royal bank of scotland usually goes in the day after...customer service have always been really helpful and happy to help, not one of those who "cant be bothered with u" you can open web savers maximum of 5 online, and name them whatever you want i.e we have savings, monthly bills, etc so i move money into each one each month so i know what can and cant spend. I would highly recommend halifax.

Plus if you open a reward current account and pay in £1000 a month you get £5 a month as a reward. no fees, no catch x

I am/was also with A&L and since we got taken over by Santander I have had endless problems as I have the same bank account number but a new sort code - some of my direct debits have failed and when I ring up the companies have ALL said ...”Oh not another Santander mix up” so I know I am not the only one. If you want to see what they are like just try ringing their “help line” 08459 724 724

Yes, we have had quite a problems since A&L (excellent) went to Santander ( last century) as well. If you haven't got plenty of free time to chase them down, then maybe stay where you are - unless you really want those better interest rates.

Friends I know who use them, I've heard complain about them. (I always remember thinking one to avoid!)

I've used First Direct for approx 18 years. I never thought I'd ever say I was happy with a bank and would recommend, but that's the situation I find myself in.

I agree with most of what you are saying. Have banked with Halifax for a number of years. Be wary off the £5 reward account though. With this account if you go overdrawn they charge you £1 a day. Wont effect me as I have never been overdrawn. I did notice that on my current account with Halifax the overdraft was £1000 before i went over to this acount. I bet a fair few get caught out with this.

For faster payment, they're useless to be blunt.
I took advantage of one of their transfer your account's to us.
I have an account with Halifax, and faster payment is minutes everytime.
These clowns, at 1st said we have a £500 limit for faster payment, then said, well we cannot guarantee timescales, then said, (honest) we're quite a small bank at the moment and we're not one of the leading players in the faster payment scheme.
Closed the account within a month citing this as a reason not to stay........this was Jan 09 to April 09 i had the account

Edited By: boydent999 on Nov 03, 2010 19:53: added timescales

Thanks for the advice chaps, very much appreciated.

I’ve decided to continue with the Santander account, should receive my card today / tomorrow. I rang customer services a couple of times, wanted to see what it was like to get thought (wait time) and how the staff were when i had a few questions.. Seemed great to me.. So far..

I’m going to keep my Barclays current account open for a few months, if Santander become an issue i’ll go back and close the account.

Barclays is good, i like the online banking and faster payments are always reliable. Only issue is there customer service has been terrible, they also charge quite a bit to use the overdraft facility. I’ve also been a victim of fraud a couple of times in the last year, both times pushing me into it. Taking 3 weeks to resolve, with them then charging me for the privilege and having to call constantly to get them to adjust my account.

It may be the same or even worse with Santander, just fancy trying to take my custom elsewhere

I was with abbey/sant for a daft interest scheme a bit back, and they were awful, slow, website buggy, telephone system send you round in circles and *some* staff in branches I found rude and obnoxious. I wouldn't say they didn't do their job, or get things done, there just seemed to be an attitude all the time - with other customers too.

Moved to Barclays, and so far so good, payments are back to speedy, and £5 a month account with iPhone insurance is a winner too.

More fool you, but at least you'll find out for yourself.

It aint just the reward account that you get charged the £1 a day. Its all halifax accounts now. I have a standard one, and i have an arranged overdraft, and got charged £1 when i went in it by 50p! and i rung and they said all halifax accounts with arranged overdrafts now get charged this....its like why have an "arranged" overdraft then ha x

Not a customer myslef - but have to go in there often for family members. Queue's are always ridiculous, every branch I've been in seems understaffed and there are always people having to deal with non-counter issues at the counter. No privacy for them and always seems to be at least one person that's having problems with a newly transferred account.

Good luck to you!

I have taken in everything people have said, which is why i’m going to keep my Barclays current account open for 6 months before closing it. See how i get on with Santander, give myself opportunity to see how they deal with issues / what it's like banking with them.

Lets face it, Barclays have just as poor reputation as Santander. With them equally being in the top 3 most complained about banks. Figure it's worth trying them out, since nobody has said anything to disastrous.

A lot of the new customer offers are only available if you let them switch your account.

You have to perform an account switch, it is not conditional that you close the previous account.

I will just keep my Barclays account open with a balance of around £20, until i feel comfortable enough to either stay with Santander or decide that it's better to move everything back onto my Barclays account and close the Santander account.

You can have as many current accounts open as you wish, only issue is that they may lower your overdraft facility if you don't have a certain amount going into each account each month. Thankfully, my salary meets the required amount i'd need to have going in both. So i'll just direct my salary to the Santander account, transfer the portion needed to my Barclays account every month.

Allows me to try out Santander with no risk.
