Hi

I'm looking for a sat nav , preferably TOM TOM ,.
I'm looking at the one with advanced lane guidance and IQ routes . Can anyone who has a tom tom tell me if these features are as usefull practically as they sound as I had the traffic update one and found it to be a useless feature which didnt really work as it should .
Its just that I don't want to buy the tom tom with all the features and spend all that money if it not worth it .
Thanks in advance

I have the Tom Tom One IQ Routes Europe. The IQ routes are good as I drove to London, never been there before and the lane guidance worked great. Think its only any good if its updated all the time but there are ways of updating without paying Tom Tom £40 a year.

If you are going to buy a TomTom then a basic one to get you from A-to-B will be sufficient. Shouldnt cost you any more than £70.

i think the lane guidance is really good in built up areas such as london-birmingham-manchester, and the iq routes bit is quite good i have the tomtom one with these and find it great,

Buy the Tomtom start, then PM me.

I'll make it at the very least a Tomtom One, and possibly computer voices, IQ Routes, ALG and speed cams. (I can't remember the specs of the tomtom start, so voices might be a bit much - but we can try!)

There are really only 2 tomtoms worth buying:

Tomtom Start (or whichever is the cheapest! - if you want euro, buy euro as internal flash memory is lower on UK only units.)
Tomtom 540 LIVE - SD card means you can put euro maps on

...unless you need a FM transmitter. They can all be upgraded legally or illegally.

vibeone/ aber - really - thanks for that -so just get the basic and i can upgrade - but dont you need some sort of special aerial for the advance lane updates and IQ routes? I know for the traffic updates I needed this wire/ aerial thingy? Are you sure the basic one can be updated to what i want ?

As far as I know the Classic doesn't support the likes of advanced lane guidance etc - so you may want to follow VibeOne's recommendation there. I just updated the maps, voices and speed camera locations on mine - very basic but I'll only need it at most once or twice a month!

ALG and IQ are features of the maps and not of the hardware so don't require an extra aerial. Upgrading the basic model to have more advanced features can be done quite easily but, of course, is illegal. Using the same methodology, you can always run the latest maps or load alternative maps eg for the USA or Europe. Again, it is illegal but can be achieved easily.

If you want to stay legal, buy a model with the maps and features you want. If you are happy to go illegal, buy the cheaper model(s) and hack. If you decide on the illegal route and potentially want to use maps other than the UK, try to get a model with an SD card slot rather than the cheapest available model.

Personally, I find that IQ routes are only useful if you are travelling around major cities at rush hour. ALG is more of a novelty than a real help.

I'm thinking about getting one of these for my girlfriend, she'll need it just to go from A to B really, places like Lakeside, Chingford and things like that.

Think this is a good little model; http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.203-9154.aspx ?

Can you put those SD cards with a map expansion etc. in one like this?

I don't believe that one has an SD Card slot and so it would rule that one out. To be clear, if you intend to illegally hack the TomTom, you can do this with any model but you are then restricted by how much memory the device has. In the case of a TomTom without an SD card slot - that would be the internal memory only. As a result, it would restrict the map expansions which would be available to the device.

If you do intend to hack a TomTom and want to install say maps of Europe and maps of the USA - I would recommend that you find a TomTom 520. This has an SD slot so you could use, say, an 8Gb SD card. It comes with Bluetooth and an FM transmitter. It can run the latest TomTom operating systems and run all the latest maps. It is also easier to hack a 520 than it is to hack a One or One XL. However, if you only want to hack so that you can use ALG and IQ with a One and have the latest UK maps - buying a One or One XL is fine.
