Scam victim self help thread

Have read a few threads recently about people falling victim to scams, some larger than others.

I read a comment in one of them pointing out that most people have fallen for a scam one way or another, thought this would be a good place to talk about it

Please note, posting in this thread may/will lead to your intellect being called into question. No being nasty though please!

Not really a scam as I knew how it worked, but I put 750 pounds into a pyramid scheme 8 years ago or so. The idea being you give someone 3k, then get 2 people to join and give 3k etc etc. When enough people do it you get 24k. I went to a few meetups and got sucked in, I was only 18 or so, and went in with 3 others.

Suffice to say I never saw it again

When I was 16, buying weed for the first time, I spent £20 on something that my friends tried, dismissed, and identified as potpourri.

Had a couple of people on ebay try and not send me the items I won and run off with my money. After a lot of persistence, got a refund from both of them. First one was about 4 years ago and for a DVD. After a few weeks of high volume sales, negative feedback started to appear. So I imagine it was a hijacked account.

Second time was some low-level feedback idiot who listed an mp3 player, which I won and he never sent. Tried to string me along but I just kept hassling him, threatening police/court (half empty threats) if he didn't refund me. Worked, but I should have known better than to bid cos his feedback was low. Usually only buy from sellers with very high feedback now. Business/power sellers if I can help it..

Ahaa me too. I got..
- Curtain hook
- Thermal flask
- Poker set

Not the worst collection of stuff.. but I already had a decent poker set and the other things were of no use to me.

When I first started using ebay I bought an Ipod (one of the first ones) and I paid money straight into the sellers bank account! We had plenty of communication and he had decent feedback. About 12 other people got scammed too.

Never been scammed, hoepfully never will be.

ebay tickets :(

In some ways I actually think it's good to be scammed once as it really makes you think twice about every purchase in the future ( obviously as long as it doesn't financially kill you)

I don't think I've been scammed, but I'm forever telling my mother off for being so trusting. The holes I've had to try and dig her out of, to no avail. She just trusts everyone, and truly believes people just aren't as bad as all that!

Edit: Just thought, TWINS. Biggest scam going (unless you get caught with triplets or worse!) Two babies, only one lot of maternity pay and leave. Sucks. X)

Never been scammed, Someone tried on Ebay though. I will describe as it may stop someone else.

I was selling my Elite, and some guy asked if I would send it to his friend in the UK and that he would send me the address by message after he had paid.
I told him/her I can't do that and would only send to a verified paypal address in this country that is verified to the paypal account that is paying. Didn't hear nothing else. I'm guessing he/her was going to wait until it had been sent and then claim through paypal for non-delivery.

Suppose there is a small chance he/she was genuine, but wasn't going to take that chance.

I sold a top on ebay about 5 years ago to someone in Germany, sent it Int signed for, and they did a chargeback- it was a stolen account. So I contacted paypal and they didn't want to know. I had full proof of postage etc, and about 12 months later I was still arguing with them and they said they'd refund if I faxed them the proof- by then I'd lost the receipt lol. I lost about £35 but I was really upset!

Also, I went shopping in a Birmingham warehouse and there was like a staged argument (we didn't realise at the time) and this black guy threatened to beat up my mom- at the same time my card was being cloned and was used to pay a £100 parking ticket. I got the money back luckily :D

I've never been scammed (yet!) but had lots of attempts of people scamming me, worried about my nan as she has given her bank details out over the phone to a telecoms company I have never heard of.

Actually feel like I was scammed by ex hubby, I bought a house before I was with him, he lived in it for about 6 months, didn't pay towards it, yet claimed Land registery for it so had to pay him off to get rid of him basically!! (_;)

You should have reported the feedback, as it is clearly retailiatory. mods would have removed it. Leaving someone bad feedback purely because they left you bad feedback is against fs\ft rules and makes a mockery of feedback system

I think she meant that the guy 'picked' a fight with her mum to distract them whilst the card was cloned. Not sure why she felt the need to colour him in!

When I was about 18, a bunch of gypsies scammed me out of 80 quid to 'repair' my chimney that they said would fall on someone's head any moment (which he demonstrated by getting his little dirty child to climb up and 'wobble' it). Fearing I might cause the death of my elderly neighbours by falling debris I stupidly agreed. They ended up semi blocking the chimney by replacing it with a narrow flue. I called them up and complained and they thought they'd do me for round 2 and said it'll cost me 50 quid to repair that but I was prepared. I agreed and waited for them to arrive the next day with a family friend who was a bobby and got them to give me my money back and replace the original chimney! That incident hasn't half widened me to scammers though and I haven't been scammed since!

Edited! Predictive tx is a birch sometimes!

Probobly mentioned it, because he was black.

Would you pick up on such comments, if she said it was a fat guy, or a ginger guy?

To this very day I still can't understand how anyone could have fallen for this scam as the Numbers can't possibly add up.
