A quick story about something that's happened over last day or 2-

I run a mobile disco on a part-time basis ( I'm not self-promoting but it is an integral part of what I'm warning folk about) & I advertise on some disco/dj-related websites like many others in the same business.

Anyway, Thursday night, i received an email in response to one of my ads. It was from a guy who wanted to enquire about a booking for his birthday party. The email was written in fairly bad English and he said he lived in the USA but was wanting to book for his party when he returns to the UK in early May. he even gave me the address & postcode of the venue, which according to google earth etc is a residential address in London area.
Now, I live in Cornwall. All my adverts on the web are targeted to Cornwall, some Devon & some Dorset as I also work in those areas, but definitely not London. For him to see my ad, he must have noticed this. My alarm bells rang a bit but I responded by re-directing him back to the website where he saw my ad & I advised him to contact a disco more local to his venue.
Well, today, lo and behold, he replied, again in terrible English, saying it was my 'best, recommondation service' he required 'at any price to me'.!!!

I replied back, and gave him a price which was ridiculous to say the least, but justifying by saying there would be travel time/costs etc.. I also said I would require a hefty deposit asap to secure the booking.( this being done tongue in cheek!)
He emailed me back before to say if I email him my bank details, he will 'wire' the fundsstraight away, as he 'most would like my kindly service like no other'.

Well.... any thoughts??????

OMG that is a new one to me - very crafty.
Tell him you only accept cheques or postal orders.
Dodgy to say the least and you did all the rights things but some other poor fool may not be as clued up as you and get badly stung.

Well this is true.Sooner or later, somebody will trip up with it.

The thing is, he had a sort-of English name, a google email address & what seems like a genuine full address in North London which he readily quoted as the venue. On google earth, it looks like a large semi-detached property. Not sure if I can put his details on here but if a mod says yes then I will in the interests of other members not getting caught by them.

I've told him cash or cheque only accepted so I'm awaiting his reply!

Im a facepainter and am constantly getting emails like this, bad grammar, bad english and always asking for my bank details. Its a scam without a doubt and i would keep away if i were you.
#12
The use of the English which always gives it away. Then they always sound really desperate at end and try and make you feel important.

as he 'most would like my kindly service like no other'.

lol

feel sorry for the person who will fall for this, and there will be somebody.

We've all come to expect bad English and stuff from these guys but what surprised me most about this in particular was that he readily gave me a seemingly genuine address for the 'venue'.

Now I don't trust folk at the best of time but even I had a slight thought of " well it could just be.." at that point.

if anybody lives in the N10 area of London, they might even know him!!

Quite easy for them to get an address up from Royal Mail with random searches to get a matching postcode for rd and so on.

How Can They Take Out Money From Your Bank If You Only Give Them Your Account Number?

Dunno - I would have thought for him to 'wire' me money, he would need more than just my account number.

I wasn't gonna go anywhere near it anyway. better safe than sorry & I've got enough genuine customers who book so happily, I don't need to take chances.

Wonder if I can scam him then??

Hmm... just read the part about money laundering...

Recently I've had some itms sold on ebay where some people are paying more for the postage then the item and asking me to send my bank details so they can pay me by bank transfer...

English sounding ebay name and not to sound funny but the emails were always *ahem* ethnic names...

Now I offer Paypal, PPPay, Nochex, cheques, postal orders and collection... as if that wasnt enough... so I wonder whether this is a wide spread thing

BTW I told each of them I didnt accept bank transfers, and funnily enough not one of them sent payment... hmm
