i have an n96 up for sale on ebay and received the old "i wanna pay with paypal and then collect asap" line

obviously i told him yep just make a bank transfer and you can come n get it and not heard from him.

so i done a search see what else he been bidding on and sure enough there is 5 or 6 high end mobile phones, so i done the right thing and messaged them all asking id he tried the same thing?

just heard back from 1 of them with this message

"hi,
thanks for your concern.yes they have collected the phone and moment after that the payment was made unauthorised on paypal.the money is on hold.now i do not know what to do.if you could pls advice.thanx"

now ive reported the buyer to ebay explaining everything but i wont hold my breath with them now i really want to message the guy back saying its ok and get him at my front door with the buyers all here or the police and to catch him before he does 1!

what do you think?

Isn't that entrapment?
#3
Yeah, speak with the police and see what they think about it, this could be an awesome bust for them and will make eBay look like the 'tards they are.

Mike..
#4
they say they havnt recievd the item

coz you have to prove proof of delivery and if they pick up you cant

so he gets his money back and you lose money and item
#5
I say go for it mate, would love to be there to see his face. But that's assuming the police will even assist you.
#6
lol i like your style of catching the theif :D

tax_me is the buyers id just in case

sounds appropriate
#13
another seller in touch:

Hey mate! It's a pity you haven't got in touch before. I've already
lost my phone on Sat and so did another guy from the same
buyer 'tax_me'. I'm really keen on finding that guy and kicking
his ass. Anyways, dunno what's gonna paypal do about it, but i
hope they release my money, cause it was someone's identity
stolen. What do you reckon?
Cheers,
Lev.

What a horrible man, a thief and a liar.
Are the other sellers local? It could be worth getting them to come round when he turns up on your door...but I would be slightly scared he might do something bad like target your house with a burglary or something as he is obviously a scoundrel!
#15
Not good if they have your address, ebay/paypal are useless and the police aren't much better. Best thing is to say that you broke the phone and it is unavailable... then relist it later, blocking that ebay user. I wouldn't want someone knowing my address.

Create a new account and buy something off of them... (if they sell anything)... then arrange to collect. Then go snuff them... standard.
#16
yeah i know thats why im saying cant really do anything.

dont want them coming to my door or having my fone number tbh

none of my business really but when you see it happening and everybody else is oblivious to it ....

especially this time of year taking advantage of people is dispicable

ive reported to ebay and advised the sellers to do the same but thats neary 2 grands worth of phones already and hes gonna get a few more i would imagine as well
#17
If they haven't got your details yet... you could give them a fake address, then when you receive payment and they go to collect (but have no luck)... you can just say, "oh paypal have told me you used a dodgy card"... then cut all ties and see if you can keep the money somehow... worth a shot.
#18
just got email from 1 of sellers who i told i would help if he got the police involved.

Hey man,

That would be great.

Did you get back in touch with him? Has he already bought your item on ebay?

I can get in touch with the police first thing tomorrow morning if we can arrange all this. Where about do you live? Or probably you could just give my address or near me (so that he doesn't get too scared, cause he could remember mine) when he calls you to arrange pick-up.

Could I give you a call tomorrow morning to discuss this?

so maybe can just tell him to meet at the police station lol

please keep me updated, or film it and send me the DVD

U got to be careful though. A carpet fitter (the boss) caught one of his workers stealing money from him... so he made a citizens arrest, tied his hands up and walked him "the long way throughout the town centre" to the police station with a sign round his neck, explaining he was a thief. Police ended up charging the original victim (the boss). See if I was running the Met things would be different, more power to the victim, and less rights for the criminal.

Can be like a happy-slap, happy beating-esque DVD/mobile phone clip... love it.

I have a better and legal idea.

Contact the BBC or Watchdog for example and ask them to set secret cameras in your house, then accept the guys offer of paypal and collect, then you'll get him on camera. Now when he or she comes show them the phone etc but just state something like "So you're used to buying phones on eBay then" and "What's it like receiving free phones now and again?".

He'll know instantly what you are talking about and he'll leave, you won't get charged and you have his face.

Great idea  That way paypal and ebay get more exposure on TV to what I would say is allowing illegal activities through their site. this dodgy scam has been going on for far too long now, especially now they insist sellers use paypal :x
#28
yeah that is nice. Think about the youtube hits this will make :D
Might be ott, but it might come on the news as well LOL
#29
i dont really want anybody round my gaff to be honest but im tempted to meet em in mcdonalds or outside the cop shop or somat. waiting to see what 1 of these sellers says after speaking to police but probably nowt!

can you believe i just had another 1 tho ffs this time its a gals name but nothing bid on just an id registered sine 2006 with 12 feedback but nothing since earlier in the year.

ive got a good mind to say yeah ok you can pay with paypal and pick up and then just post it to the address listed in paypal with a bunch of rocks in the box ffs

i must of had 8 or 9 try this in the last 2 weeks on different items

ive got one for you ! might stop the guy losing his money !

he has to provide a postal address via paypal , .................right ?
go to that address and explain whats happened ...............right ?
send a dummy parcel next day special delivery , so its signed for at that address ?
then supply the tracking number to paypal ?

..................money returned ! ( if theres funds ofcourse )

also personally , like yourself ! i cant understand why someone would accept paypal payment , when they want to collect in person ! either bring the cash or like you said bank transfer

all well in principle but ill bet the person at that address aint signing for no parcels

maybe worth a shot tho

some people arent as savvy and i think these scammers must send like a few hundred messages and only a few get accepted people i messaged were all on quite low feedbacks and i think theyre just mobile upgrades not wanted

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

If I was in your position I would probably get the police involved (seems like an easy collar for them).

Gorra stop them getting away with it. Been stung myself years ago & ebay / paypal couldnt give a lickety-huck.

When you sell anything and the buyer collects you should always get them to sign a receipt showing that they have collected the item or tell them that the transaction is cancelled,Even better if the item is expensive, tell them that you need a photograph of them collecting the item,If they refuse then tell them you will only post to a Paypal registered address,

I doubt if paypal would accept a signed receipt as easily forged
#38
A signed receipt is a legal binding document in the UK ,
#39
In fact forget that as they could just send someone else to collect and sign the receipt,The only
way is to tell them you will only post to a paypal address or cassh on collection

Get him to go to another address, sit outside and get his Car reg etc. Follow him home if need be and then give all the details to the sellers who have been scammed.
