Scan.co.uk VAT on Delivery charge??

I've just discovered something fishy with Scan.co.uk

I went to order 2 cables. It's price look cheap at first, when I check out I found that the prices are excluding VAT. Okay I thought, not exactly a good impression for retailers to quote excl VAT prices nowadays. But why is it so expensive?

The delivery for 2 cables is £3.99, which is not competitive, but still acceptable. I did my Maths and added, the tally came to £10.2, not £10.8 quoted there. It came out that the deliver charge excludes VAT as well. I have NEVER ever heard a company which charges VAT on the delivery charge quoted.

For those people who buy expensive computer equipment from there probably won't notice the fact that their delivery charge number on the invoice did not include VAT. There is no clear notice on the basket that this is the case. To me it looks like it's intentionally made to mislead and profit from it. Ok it's only 60p. But with 1000s of customers, they must had made a fortune from this.

Doesn't exactly impress me as a honest retailer.

You do if your orders less than £20

To qualify for free delivery, there is a minimum order value of £20 excluding VAT

I ordered 2 cables, so it won't quantify anyways.
But the argument stands, I am sure not all Scan.co.uk customers are AVforum members

I agree that delivery charges can be steep - on a recent order from scan I paid nearly £10 delivery including VAT, not being a forum member.

I buy quite a lot of computer parts for my son and never know the best place to buy from - it often seems that decent prices up front means poor customer service down the line.

Ebuyer have always been superb for after-sales service for me.

E-buyer is good, but their deliver charges seem high to me, unless you can wait. Used to be that you'd order using 5 day super saver and still get it despatched within 2-3. I've ordered about £400 from there in the last month or so and had to wait the full 5 days each time.

Although i'm crazy impatient!

All companies charge vat on delivery charges, it's called the law, you obviously didnt know as they probably quote inc vat.

mumbojumbo
Most couriers add VAT to their quoted delivery costs unfortunately. :(

But yeah, it's hard to spend under £20 at Scan! Lol.

Are you sure? I've never ever came across this at all. As far as I am aware most of the time the delivery charge listed already included the VAT and is final.

I was looking for 2 cables really, one of which is 3 pounds cheaper than anywhere else. But the delivery charge offsets it. I guess I will have to shop up to £20.

That's exactly what I meant.

Only if they're vat registered. His point is about them quoting ex vat and not making it clear that you have then been charged VAT on top of the quoted price.

Everywhere (excluding b2b) should show VAT inclusive IMO.

Scan is messed up its not £20. You gotta spend £24 or £25 to get free delivery now. I tried doing it when I had a item in the basket that was £21 and it never showed free delivery till I put another item in the basket which added upto £24.99 then it worked showing next day free delivery!!
