haha... after watching my wife hide under a blanket whilst i played Alan wake, I wondered what other 'scary' titles past and present would make her leave me in peace!?

Ideas people? The more obscure the better........

..getting caught with your pants around your ankles whilst playing "Leisure Suit Larry"?

No, wait...wrong thread.

You'll probably get suggestions of the "Resident Evil" &/or "Dead Space" franchises, but how about the "Project Zero" ("Fatal Frame") series? There is another title due for release this year.

Or "Siren: Blood Curse" ("Siren: New Translation")?

Resident Evil 1 here on the PS1 - 1996. When the dog jumps through the glass.

Oh, I see we're going retro already...

In that case, the original "Alone in the Dark", or even "DOOM", possibly "Quake", could prompt similar responses.

Would your wife sit through either "Saw: The Video Game" or "Saw II: Flesh & Blood"?

I was gutted that I went back and played the original alone in the dark again recently. needless to say no quite as shocking as the first play through as a child! should have left it in my memory.

Was just about to post that, me and two mates sat in the living room and very nearly cak filled pants!

Do you think the first title was better/worse (depending on your definition) than "Manhunt 2"?

Yes, so true of many fond memories that are better left as memories.

I'd also like to throw "Silent Hill" into the (mass)debate.

I was once playing Mario when the missus threatened to put me stake and chips in the bin....I was petrified that she would actually do it, so I pressed the pause button immediately and went to the table....Worrying times that I'd sooner forget.

doom3 and dead space have to be up there (and someparts of alienVpredator) for the same effect - the leaky gas valve erupting as you creep along a dark corridor....classic.

Amnesia : The Dark Descent.Very creepy game, but don't expect much action.

Some of the “F.E.A.R” franchise titles are very atmospheric. If you approach the game as a standard run'n'gun title you will miss out most of the "best bits".

There is also...

“The Path” [Windows] [Mac]
“Haunting Ground” [PS2]
“Eternal Darkness” [Gamecube]

Possibly some of the (later) “Clock Tower” series?

was also thinking a game like alan wake (dark forests and a crappy torch)with something like werewolves chucked in the mix could offer some decent scares.

Any idea when doom 4 is coming out? and is there going to be a quake 5?

"DOOM 4" [PC], [PS3], [Xbox 360] (simultaneous release) is due next year (2012) I think, as "Rage" is due in September this year.

I have not seen any announcements about "Quake 5" (yet).

I remember a housemate falling backwards off his chair playing Doom 3 during the bathroom scene. He'd just bought some surround sound speakers too and sat there in the dark playing it.

Definetley the F.E.A.R series playing on big telly, lights off and surround system on... that damn little girl in the flash sequences with the blood filled corridors.
#32
I remember Clive Barker's Undying being very atmospheric.
(it's probably poop these days though)
#33
F.E.A.R & Silent Hill 1 both spooked me out. But the scariest by far is Amnesia: Dark Descent.
The water section is bad enough, but I had a corridor encounter later on which left me absolutely petrified and unwilling to continue.

I used to hate the ps1 alien game, I used to hide behind cushion when OH was playing that game!
#35
Doom 1 on the good old playstatio with the lights off, running through the maps killing everything in sight then running back to the beginning and trying to collect 100% items and then realising I hadn't quite killed the last Imp around a corner.

amnesia is £5 atm, as a hot deal. I couldnt find it cheaper anywhere, so may want to check it out (after the demo of course if that style suits you)
