And, I just found out that our school are tagging on a teacher training day at the end, so it's actually 7 weeks and 1 day ...

Same dates as ours - can't work out where the extra week has come from though ... are we having shorter holidays in the autumn or something?!

Also VERY cross about the 'teacher training day' being tagged on to the end, so they go back on a Tuesday... grrr

Wish they gave them holidays in the winter when the weather is bad..

wow, our kids summer hols dont start till 21st July, not sure yet when they go back in september, its usually around the first week...

For those who say why have kids if you dont like the summer hols, parents have to spend a crazy amount of money come the summer hols to entertain kids with out of school activities such as camps, holidays, play and sports schemes, plus the usual child care costs. That's the fact that overwhelms parents, that the kids get bored and need to be entertained which costs parents hundreds if not thousands for the 6 or 7 weeks hols.

My eldest sons school hols are 5 wks 6 days so a bonus for him, but the others are having an extra week off due to their school being finished being built which is a pain for them as they love school.

I only get about 6, starting from July 24th and ending I think September 9th

i quite like it, i get to spend tiime with them, no having to get up early plus no having to race back for 3.00 every day. Although i am lucky enough to be able to arrange some of my work round the kids.

I have to admit though getting good childcare is expensive, places are scarce, and when you do find a good course that actually has good activities it gets expensive and a lot of the time tax credits dont apply to summer schemes etc, it cost me hundreds last summer just to send them 1/2 days a week (just to stop them betting bored of me)

I work at a college and we finished yesterday until the 7th September, although i'm in for another week and start the 1st Sept, still pretty good though

I am going to dread it when my daughter gets to school age. I hated the summer holidays - hopefully by then they will make those shorter and the other hols a little longer.

Ah right - didn't know that!

Still, got a few years to go anyhow so maybe it'll become common practice by then

I doubt it will become widespread as there is so much traditionalism within children's education.

The long summer holidays from school were first arranged as such so the children could help their parents who were mainly farm workers at the time, to tend the crops, bring in the hay etc.. it's THAT outdated.

Theres many theories that bounce around and some schools work with them. They're mainly independent schools, so not so dependent on government money. But I doubt such practice will become widespread.

Plus if your little one is near or around her second birthday you need to think about nursery/preschool arrangements now as so many nurseries have a waiting list of longer than 12 months before a child is admitted. Especially if you live in a city area, with lots of competition for places.

I technically have the same time off as childrens holidays, but i work from home during those times, and no i dont work in a school lolI
I find it a joy to be home with them however i do appreciate how expensive, hard it is. The cost alone to entertain them can be worrying.
Mine tend to read, play on the Wii,go online, go in the garden, draw, my daughter writes fictional stories, etc so i very rarely have an squabbling issue do to the age gap.

As for when they break up ermm 20th July till 1st September

Blimey - are the rest of the holidays shorter to compensate?

Just can't work out where the extra week has come from this year - one of the other hols somewhere must be shorter surely - just can't work out which one yet!

It's just so blooming expensive paying for childcare & that's why I'm peeved about the extra week ...

I don't know if the rest of the holidays are shorter as I'm not sure what holidays you get in England.
Kids here have a week for mid-term around Halowe'en, 2 weeks for Christmas, another week mid-tern in February and 2 weeks for Easter. The summer term isn't long enough for a mid term break!
