Hi i had been learning to drive but gave up
and thinking about it for the amount i would be driving a car seems an expensive want

So i though hey im gunna be doing about 6miles a day max why not get a scooter

So i was wondering if you lot could give me any help on going about this

Scooter = probably bout £650 for a 50cc
Insurance = how much would it cost me an 18 year old
CBT - how much is this and how long does it take to complete and last

Is it best to get the scooter first and practice ina private area e.g car park then do my cbt ?

All scooters are auto right ?

Cheers

Daniel

Err, Can't help with all of them, But not all scooters are Auto, Most 50cc's are, But most 125cc's aren't.

If you want an Auto your looking for a "Twist and go".

get a car!

Daniel - personally, I wouldn't give up on driving just yet mate.

Stick with it and you will get there in the end. You will regret not passing whilst you are young later on in life!

With regards to Mopeds / Scooters, haven't got a clue mate and believe they should all be banished to a deserted Greek Island where 17 year old Chavs can drive them with no helmets on in peace....!

let me know if you do want one i am trying to sell one and i'm not far from you not sure about the other stuff though, i brought it for my ex but he never used it

dont get a moped i get p d off with them as they go so slow, they are also more dangerous and you could get a car for the same price. dont give up on driving you will prob end not taking your test for years if you do
banned#7
also congrats on 2000 posts :)

Get a 125 2stroke mate as they dont go slow and will go about 60mph standard and you can pick a good one up second hand for about £600, CBT will take one day and you can't really fail it as it is not a test but its training and this costs about £100, insurance depends on what area you live in but third party only shouldnt bee too much.

pm'ed you, got a helmet (used) and jacket (never used) as well
#10
If you buy anything secondhand, Don't buy a helmet!

A helmet needs to fit correctly, They also deteriorate over time, Its the only thing that protects your head from the road if you ever came off, Make sure the helmets a good 'un!

(Good helmets around around £150+)

Go for it. You can de-restrict 50cc's easy enough these days. They are so much fun, especially in the summer. 125's are even more fun.
#17
If you are just going to be doing 6 miles every day then why not get a bike (on which you cycle). I cycle 7 miles every day to and from school and its really easy, each way takes 20 mins. Its muuuuch cheaper than getting a ped/car, you dont need petrol, you dont need insurance and you dont need to take a test + you'll be saving the evironment + your health.

i have owned bikes and scoots when i was younger

personally i think a scooter is a good way of getting round - i had one when i got my first job which was 3 miles down the road - it would have costed me £15 a week to get there on the bus - but i got a new scoot on finance for around 40 a month which gave me freedom - (i couldnt drive then)

i loved it - at the end of the day most 50's these days come de-restricted and will do between 50-55 and 125's will hit 65ish

best fun i ever had - and the thing is for short journeys (city etc) they are just as quick as a car

as for cost - dont get too cheap a bike as you get what you pay for

insurance should be no more than 200 (most tend to be under £120)

as for the bike - personally i would go for either a aprilla or a italjet - my fave being either the italjet formula 50 or dragster 50/125

any questions feel free to pm me as it is (or was up until 2 years ago) my specialist subject as i tended to do all my own repairs

as for helmet - to be fair you want to spend around 100 if possible - but certainly no lower than 50 - theres always a good deal to be had

pm me if you want to know anything else

Yeah get a good make bike like gilera, piaggio, aprilia or italijet as they have loads of parts available and most of them share the same engines.

i forgot gilera - the runner is a great scoot with leg warmers (not sure about new models) stay away from the DNA though - cops like to pull them over from my experience - also i think they look a bit tacky
banned#21
yah and the dna looks like a ant lol, still not a bad engine tho so cant complain about them:thumbsup:

Well at the moment my work is limited to where i can get to via bus but there was a job but i couldnt get there as no bus route and it was quite a distance so having a scooter would be perfect

Anythings expensive now-adays

Well 6 miles a day isn't much to be fair, I'd say cycle. But if you have to go down busy roads etc. You'd definatly get a good bike for £350. But, your best off getting a 4-stroke 125cc bike to be fair. My friend has an XR125 (which is for sale at the minute, 5k miles), geared bike, does 240 miles to a full tank which costs him £12. So if my maths is correct, probably wrong, your paying approx 40p a journey.

Scooter = Hmm. 125 scooters aren't great, seeing as your over 17 you can have a bike up to 125cc on a CBT. I'd say push your price range up, because your better off with a geared bike, or a well branded (aprilla, yamaha, derbi, honda, etc) bike seeing as your looking at reliability more than anything.

Insurance = With no road experience, cost my friend £459 on an XR125 with one years experience on a 50cc ped. Other friend had a race tuned RS125, cost him just over £540, and on a Derbi SM50 it cost one of my mates £350.

CBT = On a geared bike the test can be up to 2hours longer as you are having to get use to clutch and gears. On a scooter its usually 2hours just for a quick rag around a carpark then onto the road to be assessed. So in theory on a geared bike it could take up to 4hours.

dandoc2

Is it best to get the scooter first and practice ina private area e.g car park then do my cbt ?

Will always benefit if you can get some practice. Same with everything.

All scooters are auto right ?

Yes.

ouch sod that then i could get a car insured for that

Umm started my lessons january and stopped may

Have had 20 lessons-im not bad im just a very nervous person and think of the worse -----i can parallel park - bay park and 3 point turn (not amazing ) all pretty well --ive not smashed anybodys car -- drivings fine as long as its on level ground - traffic i can cope but ive stalled many times in traffic because i bring my clutch up too much so i can ease along in the congestion

I havent taken my theory and id be ina mad rush to pass my theory as sep 1st they change it to like a 70 mark exam not the current outta 35

I think i could pass my driving test if it wasnt for the hill start but becos you do do that im not taking it for a long while

Could do with some practice in an enclosed area so i can master the clutch but no luck where i am in surrey

I'd like to see where!

Even on your parents insurance and a tin box will be near enough £700+ depending on the car, Security, where you live etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if insurance topped out at £1000+ for a new driver.

Yer your probs right but £500 insurance for a moped is way too much i thought it be like £150 tops

When i do get a car (mini original :D) im guna have it parked in the garage to get my cost down and say i live in a house surrounded by steel gates and everyone who lives around here is called jesus

Really? I'd like to know where since your still having lessons. Most people I know at 18 are paying at least £700 on insurance =/ Know someone on their first year of driving paid £1300 TPFT on a Saxo V Reg 1.1.

Its not £150 tops for a ped lol, go check out Bennetts.co.uk. I've tried for a RS50, SM50 and a DT50 and its been between £250 - £400 third party fire and theft.

I did a est for a mini and it came to £900 but if i go on my dads i can get it for £600

those insurance prices are mad!

the rs is a common "bike" rather than a scooter - same with the first one - trust me your talking under 200 i guarantee
#35
Hill starts are easy once you know how to do them, plenty of gas and slowly bring the clutch up and then let off the hand brake, i've done 20 lessons now and i learned how to do a hill start yesterday.
#36
Get a car & then wait til your 21 & get a proper bike !!!

A nice 600CC Hornet/Bandit/Fazer will see you right
banned#37
you can get a car insured for about £500 if your 18 some of my friends have, but their car is only worth about £500 and they have a high excess thingy.
