Scots plan to stop cheap alcohol

The Scottish Government said it planned to ban discount deals

Measures to tackle alcohol abuse by stopping cut-price offers have been outlined by the Scottish Government.

It has proposed a range of measures including the radical step of a minimum price per unit. It would be the first country in Europe to take the step.

The minority government said it also plans to ban discount deals on alcohol.

SNP ministers decided against raising the off-sales age limit to 21 - but will create powers to allow such curbs to be imposed on a local basis.

Local chief constables will also be able to request such a move.

Other measures include restricting the display and marketing of drink to specific areas within off-sales premises.

Some have suggested it's a matter of time before other countries follow suit. Like the smoking ban really.

It's still to get through the parliament - just a proposal up till now.

Bet there will be ways and means of beating the legislation. Order from Laithwaites etc?
But it's a swine - I'll be paying the price for the yobs and nutters who can't behave themselves after drinking or don't know when to stop. Mental note - stock up before the act is passed and on the way home from hols!

This will be like the snps promise to cut school class sizes, abolish council tax etc-just so much hot air from a lame duck government who cant get any legistlation introduced.

Can you seriously imagine the supermarkets standing for a two tier system where the Scottish ones sell the same product for more than the English ones?

Another headline grabber, just like the time the european union were going to ban sausages blah blah-it will just NEVER happen.

every time the country is in serious trouble, rather than actually address those issues governments head down side roads and headline grab in an effort to deflect from their failings.

I listened to the news about this today and I dont think it will ever happen in Scotland

I see your point but nutters are nutters, chavs are chavs-anyone intent on causing trouble while out their heads on drink will do so no matter what it costs-its a mentality rather than a financial consideration.

if this were ever made law the only people who may consider buying less are sensible people actually trying to watch their pennies-would not cause one less fight/stabbing outside a nightclub ever imho.

Why should I be penalised for the idiotic yobs who don't know when to stop drinking? There should be harsher penalties for people being drunk and disorderly

Good thing, imo. The majority of trouble caused by alcohol occurs within daytime hours, during the week, and is mostly fueled by cans f beer costing as little as 50p. People just can't be trusted within their own homes. I think this country would be a lot safer if a can of beer was increased to something in the order of £3, and sold only in dedicated outlets. Preferably ones with an "open container" policy, preventing people stockpiling supplies to take home with them. Scotland's drink problem with be solved overnight.

Oh Yeah? Prohibition fairly worked in the States, eh?

Can we have it with our methadone in an open container?

Come on, get real mate! Punish the offenders not us all. Why not punt up the price of fags to £50 a pack and close down hot deals while you're at it.

I take it the party at your place is off this weekend?

I work with a lot of Norwegians. Booze is extremely expensive out there - like £5+ for a pint. But that doesn't stop them from drinking. In fact I don't think I've ever seen people knock back the booze as much as the Nogs. A lot of the young ones brew their own as well. Stopping cheap deals won't stop people from drinking.

would have been better to up the drinking age to 21 instead of 18, and ID cards, personally im all for them if it'll help stop under age drinking amongst other things , They have them in the USA and you have to be 21 to buy alcohol and cigarettes , if you look under 30 you get carded. I was 25 when i was asked to prove my age in the states..lol never once been asked in the UK. I was working behind bars in nightclubs at 16 but if my dad caught me drinking underage he would have locked me up and thrown the key away ( i did do it and was lucky never got caught or in trouble with the law)
There are kids living round me drinking beer, vodka and smoking who knows what at the age of 10 i blame the parents as they are just as bad if not worse

You don't need ID cards to accomplish that. In the USA you can't buy alcohol without picture ID. That can be on the driving license or a passport or a credit card with embedded photo. We don't need to give the government justification for introducing an expensive ID card scheme just to solve the drinking problem.

This is the biggest load of carp ever from the Scottish Government and I am incensed by it. !!!

The usual use of one brush to tar all philosophy...

Just go back to making my own...this is a complete and utter disgrace and I am ashamed and astounded that an SNP Government thinks this 'fix-it' should work. We should be promoting sensible drinking and targeting the young instead of having a pop at everyone.

Get a grip Alex - or this one WILL come back and bite you in the bum come election time

Nah, relax, I was taking the pss anyway. Sad thing is, it scares me that the SNP would probably look at that post and agree with it, since it';s basically the exact same logic that they're using to justify raising the prices of drink to be drunk at home.

In reality, the entire scheme is just a trick to try and stop us drinking at home, so we can all g back to drinking in pubs. This is important to the SNP, because the Scottish government makes keg-loads of tax revenue out of pubs, and they're going bust at a phenomenal rate at the moment. Think of how many of your local pubs have gone under lately. Me, three of mine, including my regular, have died. It's just a scam to save them so they can get more cash out of us, tat's all.

SNP can go to hell.
