scott1295: Starting to decorate my room tonight

So as some of you may or may not know I like to post a thread after my lunch while i'm at work. Today is all about me decorating my room.

Can possibly do before and after pics.

I am thinking just something really quite plain - like cream with a red feature wall or with red skirtings around the ceiling.

What do you guys think - discuss?

Thanks for the enthusiasm :p - It is currently a bit tatty and not been decorated properly (only painted) since we moved in about 6 or 7 years ago.

No this will take a few weeks to do (work 8to5 through the week) and then I'm only 18 so enjoy my weekends- my room really is tiny though so hoping to get it finished in the bank holiday weekend.

There are a few problems that I am going to encounter though because I need to get some sort of defence against a bit of damp that developed in my cupboard over the winter and need to try an find a bed that will fit across the top of my room - a rough guide would be that a mattress fits without the bed frame. So thinking about a Divan bed but then not sure if it will be able to manovuere into place as the mattress bends etc.

Thinking about taking part of the skirting boards out and replacing them with some sort of beading or something along the edges. Getting new carpets, curtains etc.

if you remove the skirting you may pull plaster off to, usually the skirting board hides where the floor meets wall as it is never finished off that well, so expect to be doing a bit of plastering

Had a look in Google for you, scott1295, regarding removing the woodchip paper - good luck!

This site seems the best for honest advice:

Good bit of advise there . I'm a decorator and use a steam stripper to get this stuff off the walls . Dont leave the plate on the wall more than about 5 seconds with a plastered brick wall as you may pop the plaster .Easy to fix though with a water based filler . Painting the walls is quite popular nowadays with maybe one wall papered as a feature . Cannot go wrong with something like buttermilk or even magnolia as there nuetral colour's and will go with any other colours you have in the room . If the walls are bad , you simply cross line with lining paper and then paint .
