SDHC card won't work in my PC - need to transfer files... HELP!

My camera stores all photos to a 4gb SDHC Card, Sandisk, with a small 2 in a circle on it. It looks like every other sd card I've ever had, but they all worked in the PC, this one won't. I've always uploaded the pics from the camera using the supplied usb cable, but the camera has gone in for repair, the cable too. I've got the card still, and it's stuffed full of photos I want to get off it. Am I missing something obvious? It fits in the slot I've always used, but causes my PC to hang for about 10 minutes when I try to search for it, then refuses to believe there's anything in said slot.

Cheers.

I don't know. How do I find out? I'm guessing it doesn't. Where do I buy said 'thingy'? (And what does it look like?!) :)

Anything like this would do the job:

That's looks fab - thanks for the effort... might just wait until my camera comes back though... a tenner is a lot when it would work with the camera. Next time I'll know to buy the right sort of card. Hopefully now the camera does come back repaired, not irreparable and refunded! I can always buy the cable later on. Cheers again guys - I knew someone would know what I was doing wrong. I thought all these cards were the same! <3

Poundland sell them, also a driver update can add support sometimes.

There's no poundland near me... might ask my mum to have a look though. Am looking at how to update drivers for that port. Thanks.

Just updated that drive, it says it is already the most up to date - software dated June 2006!!!! Is there a way I can force it to do something?

One is called SD the other is SDHC, different names for different cards.
Ebay Item number: 110606448901

You super star you. Looks to be perfect, ordered and paid. I was searching for adaptor, not reader - thanks again. xxxxxxxxx

SD & SDHC are roughly the same. HC stands for High Capacity as SD only usually goes up to 2GB (although 4GB is possible).

So, if you want to use newer larger cards they will all be SDHC which is also faster. Any SDHC reader will handle SD, just not the other way.

Could it be your memory card is knackered and not your camera?

No - definitely the cable connection from the camera to the usb lead - something rattling and no longer connecting properly. I thought I could just get the pics off the card, but it's not recognising it. That thingy dcx suggested says it should do the trick. :)

Ah ok. Another thing you can try is to see if there is an updated driver for your card reader that will allow it to read SDHC.

Edit: Just seen it was a PC. What's the make and model of the card reader?

Erm, it's just the SD port... I've bought that thing dcx suggested - it'll be here in a day or two, so I'm sorted for now. If for some odd reason that doesn't work I'll be back on here asking for more info! Thanks anyhow. :)
