Documents detailing secret government plans in the 1970s to prevent Scotland laying claim to North Sea oil have been seen by The Times. They show the extraordinary lengths to which civil servants were prepared to go to head off devolution, which was seen then as inevitably leading to independence.

They've been doing that for decades :p

Personally I'm all for devolution, I feel having control over the entire country and having a chance to tell the EU to ****** off is too good an opportunity to ignore!

haha..

As if a discussion that took place almost 40 years ago has any relivance now - particularly since the fields concerned are pretty much empty.

I'd be interested to know just how many of the NSO fields are actually in international waters (therefore no country can lay claim-ie a free for all). No reason pipes couldnt be laid from those to the power house of the United Kingdom! How long are the Russian pipes? Damn site further than needed here for sure! As for the OP tags of "theivery" - I LOL
