Self certification

Had a look on google but can't get an actual answer.

I was due to work on Christmas day and my OH rang up on the thursday before.

What is the actual start date of my certification? The first day I was off sick from work or the day that my OH notified them that I was ill?

I am due back for 3 shifts wed to fri and at the moment I don't think I will make it, trying to ascertain whether I need to get a doctors note or can self cert.

I believe it depends what is in your contract. Mine states from when I'm not fit to work, so the first day of sickness.

Thats what I thought but then read something saying that your illness can start on a day when your not meant to be at work, which is what has confused me.

usually after the first 3 days

So in theory my first day sick was christmas day. My shift pattern had me as DO on sun, mon, tue. Back to work wed, thur, fri. So that should mean I am covered on my self cert for the whole period?

Can be interpreted 2 ways, from first day off sick or first day fell sick?

Stupid work for accepting a sick call off you OH. Not allowed in my job and its pathetic to even do it. What are you 10 yrs old? Unless you're in hospital on your death bed.

because your OH informed them you were sick on Thursday that is your first day of self certification,
Why did he do that?
Quote :-

Sickness of seven days or less

Your employer can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. This is called self-certification.
Self-certification forms

Self-certification forms usually include details such as:
information about your sickness or illness
the date your sickness started
the date your sickness ended
These dates may be days that you don’t normally work. For example, your sickness could start or end on a Saturday, Sunday or bank holiday.

It should be from the first day you are sick so would be Thursday but your employers may not pick you up on that and accept it.

I wish I was skiving, I had to spend christmas day alone because I was so ill. I don't skive and have never skived and its because of people like you that I am worrying.

All I am trying to establish is if I need to visit doc and get a sick note, advice from Doc surgery is that I shouldn't go in to surgery as have flu virus, hence why I am wondering what to do.

My OH rang on the thursday because he wanted to prewarn my manager that I was ill as I was worrying about letting them down over christmas.

i understand how you feel, it annoys me how work colleagues never believe its genuine when people are off sick and it does look even more suspicious at xmas but it cant be helped, my partners had to have time off over xmas as our sons been in hospital and no dount people will think hes taking the pee. i think though for the sicknote its from the first day you rang in sick. hope you get better soon, im just recovering from sickness and the runs,

over bank holidays most companys ask for a doctors certificate - also if you are self certificating it is the first day that you report that you are sick so even if it wasn't over a bank holiday it would run from the day he rang in

The first day is the first day you are unable to work regardless of if its a work day I believe.

Thanks for all the replies, looks like I will be visiting the Docs on wed then even though it tells me not to with flu symptoms but im not well enough to work, especially as I work for the NHS and care for the elderly and people with supressed immune system. I'm still coughing, runny nose and generally weak. May need to visit docs anyway as think my cough may be a chest infection.

Just got really confused as the information on websites was not clear and I don't usually take time off work and I have not ever had to self cert before as I have only had a odd day off in the past.
