Hi! advice wanted please. I went to a self serve petrol station today and followed the instructions of putting my card in and pin number etc,it then said fill petrol p to £70 worth. I went to get the nozzle to put in the petrol and nowt happened!! I couldnt get any petrol to come out. I gave up in the end and went to a different petrol station. Now im worried that someone may have come after me and used my card for petrol. I hope this makes sense :( please help.

Hmm, no way of telling really until your statement comes through or you contact your bank tomorrow. Is likely, but there may be a time delay in terms of 5mins after you enter your pin it cancels or something.

Was there anyone directly behind you to pull up to the pump?

I should think it cancelled when you put the pump back into it's holder like it would had you actually filled.

I would have waited a while to see if it cancelled, u know when it offers a receipt or not etc. Did you wait a little while?

Gut feeling is that you should be fine but if you do have a prob with it, perhaps you could ask the garage to assist you with who used your money with their CCTV? As I said first though, I'm sure there will be no need

yeah thanks loveys I feel a bit better now. I should have known not to go to them bloody things. All it said when I put nozzle back was insert card

You will be fine then:thumbsup:

+1 if it said insert card, not 'fuel upto GBP70' then you're absolutely fine. Double check with your bank but you'll be fine.

If ppl could fuel up with it surely whenever anyone uses the self service one the person afterwards could still use your card.. eg if i used it eg got £10 of petrol and the person behind me fuelled too then it would be on mine so surely when you put the nozzle back up its got to end that transaction otherwise everyone would be paying for the person afterwards fuell???? if you get what i mean?

You may not need to be worried but this happenned to me once and my card WAS cloned. I cant be sure it was from there, but I think it was. I thought nothing of it at the time, until I went to use my card and I could not take out any money. I NEVER use the self pay creit card machines in petrol stations now. My bank told me that petrol and car parks where you use cards to pay are COMMON places for cards to be cloned. I went into the petrol station shop and they told me I had not been charged, but I had the exact same thing where I put in pin etc, said ok then never allowed me to get . A few weeks later, I was unable to take out any cash as some idiots had taken out $350 from my account in New York.

how hard is it to use it tells you what to do

push button to pay at kiosk push another to pay at pump

if paying at pump insert card enter pin remove card take fuel

would you like reciept yes no?

idiot proof

if you had problems you should have went to kiosk

This happened round our way but it wasn't self service machines but the normal chip + pin machines in the garage. It's the back street franchises you have to avoid.

Can't believe OP didn't speak to the people in the garage. I would contact the credit card company ASAP

Dont worry, just keep an eye on your account. It could be a genuine error, or it could be (worse case scenario - fraudsters got your card number. If that happens then the bank will investigate and give you your money back.) Just keep an eye on your statements, I never thought anything of it at the time until like I said I could not get any money out. My bank were great, and there was also lots of other people in the local area who had their cards scammed at a petrol station at that time (was in local paper)
