Selling Laptop On eBay?
Hi guys
I have a couple questions regarding selling a laptop on eBay. I have sold many things in the past but nothing anywhere near the value of a laptop, so I was wondering if there are any tips and precautions I should take to make sure I don't get screwed over? I'm very nervous about selling such a high value item on the bay, so would be interested in any cautionary tales any of you have :)
My other question is how much would you say I could rightfully expect to sell this particular laptop for?
It is a 1st Gen Dell XPS 17. Kept in immaculate condition with a screen protector on. Literally no scratches anywhere and almost looks new. Just over a year old.
The specs are
-Intel Core i7 Q 840 @ 1.87GHz
-8GB Ram (2x2GB & 1x4GB)
-Blu-Ray Reader
-1600x900 screen
-Nvidia 445m GPU
-Hard Drive Bay 1 - 500GB Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid Hard Drive (With 4GB SSD Nand, and does make a difference in boot up times but obviously not as much as a true SSD)
-Hard Drive Bay 2 - 320GB Seagate Momentus 7200RPM Hard Drive
-Bluetooth Build In
-2x USB 3.0 Ports & 2x USB 2.0 Ports

Cheers, Yeah will definitely send it special delivery.
The serial number is still there too (but will cover it up when I take a pic)
what if the sellar returns it to you as faulty but sends a broken laptop thats the same model ?
if the serial number is visible surly that wud avoid that scam ?
Plus if they did try to pull a fast one and send you a faulty laptop back the service tag wouldnt match.
to see what your tag is log into their website and it will automatically detect the laptop and give you all the info
hth and good luck.
oh and when i sold mine i hand delivered it, charged £30 postage and asked if they preferred me to deliver it instead of sending it via royal mail/courier. they where happy as they could test the laptop etc and i was more than happy as i had received the full value in cash so no comebacks for them if they did try to pull a fast one.
i used to sell high value items like laptops etc on ebay and i had quite a few people try it on with various messages wanting to collect and pay with paypal and others putting unauthorised claims through paypal....sadly there are a lot of people out to scam you in the uk with various approaches

Oh sorry, I thought you meant the serial number for Windows 7 X)
Ummm not sure yet. I'm a bit sceptical on selling on here as I never have done before and not sure how much protection there is?

This is what worries me.. Is it possible to receive a payment on paypal, but then have it "bounce" a day or two later after you've sent the laptop out for delivery?
If sending it make sure it's obviously covered with insurance, record all serial numbers and seals. Also I always take a video of anything expensive i'm selling showing the main functions working, also include something to prove that it was you that has taken the video, I normally just show my ebay page in the recording. And when packing the item up take photos to ensure it is well packaged.
It may seem a few things to do but it should protect you from scams but you can never be 100% safe as a seller when the buyer is using paypal. And if it's damaged in transit you will have everything you need to claim and show the item was working and well packaged.
Good luck with your sale :)
Yes they can bounce any time if they've used a debit or credit card they can request a charge back from there bank and then paypal will freeze funds, this could happen any time after they have paid however, even after the 45 days to claim a dispute have passed!

by step brother fell victim to a scammer for his xbox 360 and all his game
you gott abe so careful
just make sure the funds actually show on your paypal not just the email
also just make sure as say you take the best pics possible of serial numbers etc and put them on the item when selling and actually state the serial number on the item description so that buyer cannot complain to ebay about the model you sent
It is worrying though because I've heard that if a buyer opens up a dispute, then they'll more or less always win!
Just a question about paypal.. Once the money is sent and in my account, is there anyway for it to be cancelled or for the buyer to reverse the transaction?
yes, by claiming unauthorised transaction on their paypal/bank/debit or credit card
'fraid so. I would have a good read of the seller protection pages on Paypal to try and minimise any chance of being scammed.....

But if this happens , in theory you may qualify for Paypal seller protection.......

i wouldn't even bother with ebay for a laptop, sell its locally and you'll get the same sort of money with no hassle
oh i yeah
darn, ebays well iffy
no wonder i never sell anything really expensive

Ouch! I'm pretty worried now about using ebay.
The thought has crossed my mind, but I'm not sure how protected you are on here? Also, the buyer would probably (understandably) require me to send first which I just wouldn't be willing to do.
