Selling on Ebay, Taxes, HMRC and Business

redondo5redondo5

I've just got a few questions about seling on ebay... wondering if anyone here knows...

How likely are HMRC to crack down on sellers on ebay who don't declare their profits?

How do HMRC track sellers? Feedback? Account Status i.e. Private Seller or Business?

Can you be a registered Business Seller on ebay, yet not declare your trade to HMRC?

I personally can't stand paying taxes, especially to a government that does very little for me.... They tax everything....you pay income tax, then there's National Insurance, then there's all the stuff we buy with our take home pay....which is taxed 17.5% VAT, then there's the additional extortianate taxes on Petrol and Alchohol, Tobacco if you smoke etc... We pay Council Tax which has gone up, and they even take 40% tax on inheritance from "high" value homes

If you look at it, from the money we earn by working or trading....if the government gets their piece, we are only left with a very tiny portion of that. Let's say 15K salary, I'd be quite confident in saying at least 7-9K goes to the government one way or another. And what do I get in return for all this tax???

I don't see why the government should benefit from 2 people trading between themselves...

The Government can spend plenty of money on War and Benefits for people who came off the boat yesterday...anyway....

Their was a big debate on this a while back, its very hard for them to charge you unless you admit to it, basically because auctions be it physical or online have always been classed a s a hobby. Thats not to say they wont try though.

You can call it Fraud and even bring ref to the legislation on this matter....

as far as I'm concerned, I know that from the money I earn and work for 12 months of the year.... for at least 6-7 of those months my money goes to the government....

Strictly speaking it prob would be called fraud or something similar. But I was only razzin ya, I agree we pay too much tax. I do think however those people running empires from their homes on ebay should be made to pay tax like any other business (i.e. powersellers +)

I don't...I say.... live and let live....

I won't have to pay less tax if they start paying taxes....

But in turn comes back to you, do you not want protection from the police or an ambulance or hospital to help you?

when was the last time you used a road? i know there are not in a great state, but the roads you use are worth a hell of a lot more than you pay in taxes!

if you sell personal items, such as games you've used but don't want anymore then that's not taxable. if you sell things you bought to sell, like you see a bargain game in a shop, buy it, then sell for a profit on ebay that's taxable. this is why you're not taxed if you sell your car (apart from the fact it's probably gone down in value.lol)

that said redondo, i do agree with you. i'm also in favour of the american health insurance policy idea, instead of pumping cash into a struggling health service for other countries to abuse. for example, those coming over for specific (and free) operations. i regularly see the local papers detaling operations going ahead on babies from overseas at St Marys hospital Mcr which is one of the best anywhere. They simply fly over, have the operation and leave. To my mind, if you've not paid in - you can't take out! If my son needed a life saving operation and they only offered it say in america, I'm sure I'd have to pay - and affordable or not i'd find the money somehow. i wouldn't gee up support from the community over there and plead my case for it to be free. when in rome !!

furthermore on tax, i also believe that road tax should be abolished and fuel duty should be increased to cover. that way the little old dear round the corner who only uses her car to visit her husbands grave once a month and isn't causing any long term damage to the roads won't be taxed as much as all the HGV's running up and down the country all day long (particularly overseas registered vehicles who pay no tax to repair our roads at all !) my philosophy - if you use it, pay for it !!

So are you saying the roads are worth more than £7,293,148,560 a year?
    (Population X £120 road tax)

True, but I personally would rather have more money and pay more then give it to our greedy government

you cant do the population x £120. That just doesn't work out.
Large number of population are under 17 to start with.

There was 31m cars in 2003 so the correct answer is 320,000,000
So 320m a year is still a lot!

    yes, and?
obviously I meant not all road tax is £120, unless every person in the uk has a car that is under a 1.6

how many new roads do you seeing built.... maintanance of roads does not require me to pay so much taxes..... every week i get the council bin man to empty my rubbish....and that's it.....

i'd rather not pay any taxes ... and pay for hospital treatment when i need it.... you could have one basic tax (to pay for essential services) and get rid of the others

The basic deal with the government (whether you accept it or not): You work for 12 months, 6-8 months solely for the government so they can "protect you" and "provide services" and for the remaining 6-4 months you can keep you hard earned money..... To me....it's a form of slave labour and signing up to things (albeit indirectly) which I may be totally against e.g. like (illegal) War......surely it would be better for US TO CHOOSE HOW WE WOULD LIKE TO USE OUR EARNED MONEY?

where else in life would you ever accept that sort of "deal"....if someone posted a deal like that here....it'd be ICE COLD!

Maybe I do ....but i should be able to decide when I pay for hospital treatment....

and as for Police service....we could pay for all similar essential services under a single basic tax.... the way we pay tax now.....we don't realise how much of our money goes into the government coffers never to see the light of day again

If anyone thinks the current DEAL with the government is value for money...I'd like to hear how they come to that conclusion, because as far as I can see....it's total rip-off.....I can never get good hospital treatment when I want....I have to wait usually months....while someone from abroad can come in and have something done immediately sometimes.... it doesn't sound fair to me..... benefit system is a total shambles....where "refugees" are given priority because the government decided to start a War in their country....so not only did the government use my money to by weapons to start dropping billion dollar bombs they also use my money to finance the "refugess" and asylum seekers from these places to take more money and give them priority housing... Oh, and I forgot to mention it's usually corrupt government back companies (although mostly US) that benefit from the rebuilding process in these countries...so we all pay tax so these fat cats and their little friends can keep on making more money.....why is our petrol so much more expensive than on the continent? Even after we should have access to Iraqi Oil our prices are sky high....companies like Shell and BP have record profits (going into billions)....and I still have to pay the amount of tax I do???

Yes, this DEAL is VERY HOT!

Anyway point of this, is, maybe tax avoidance is not a bad thing....obviously tax evasion is a crime and the government would like you to think iot something very EVIL....but maybe they (the government) should look at themselves first...
