My step dad is wanting to sell his old reg number, which is on retention - any idea where best to sell it, and what kind of price - he said he would maybe have got more for it if the X7 hadnt got cancelled..

Reg number is X7 SDY so nothing special - he bought it off DVLA...see there are sites that will quote and buy - am guessing these are sites who will list it for you, take commission and then you get not much back? Is he better seeling it on fleabay or trying local paper etc?

Around ten years ago I sold a "cherished plate" on a 1963 Morris Traveller 1000 (the vehicle it was originally applied to). The registration mark was worth about £400; the car about £50 (as scrap). I gained an enquiry to purchase the "mark" from a Morris Minor specialist workshop & agreed as long as the buyer organised the removal of the vehicle at the same time. They drove a 260 mile 'round trip to collect the car.

The "mark" wasn't particularly 'special' it was just the (3 letter/3 number) "XXX 123" format that attracted the buyer in the first place.

You may be lucky finding somebody with the initials "SDY" by placing a classifieds listing here:

Good luck!

Thanks - website RegTransfers.co.uk sent a mail o a valuation request -

Thank you for your enquiry regarding registration mark X7 SDY.

We would be pleased to sell the registration on your behalf and would return you the sum of £600 NET to yourself upon the completion of the transfer.

Anyone know anything about these people? i got the link off the DVLA site as they have a list of companies to try to sell your plate through...

Yes, I have used them previously to try & source me a registration mark.

I eventually bought it for £400 cheaper direct from the DVLA site! :)

They may have already had an enquiry about your exact mark & have a buyer lined-up (who is probably willing to pay £1,000 or more).

You may be able to sell it for more privately, but it is a trade-off between your time & the fact you may not ever find a buyer versus accepting a potentially lower offer now.

Try using Retransfers or any of the other sites of a similar nature (just 'Google' for "Cherished Plates" to turn up many matches) & enquire about either the exact combination or similar marks that do have a value on them already (e.g. "X6 SDY", "X8 SDY", "Y7 SDY", & so on).

If you find that the monetary offer you have received looks worthwhile based on what similar marks sell for then I would suggest taking the offer.

thats strange cos my sister checked the retention thing and the date on it is 281111 - he used the Astra over winter and has a little sporty car for when weathers better - am not sure the full story with it or when he put it on retention cos she just text me b4 I put the question up on the site asking if I knew where to sell it for him...
