I recently came to an agreement with a buyer on here to send a cheque for a product. Nothing against you but i just wanted to check the procedure lol. Is it secure to send a cheque to another member and once it is cleared he said he will post?

Any info please post or PM me

This is what I would do.

Treat it as though you where sending to any stranger.

Make sure it's a crossed checked and send it registered post. Don't forget you may have to wait around 10 days for the check to clear BEFORE the seller posts it.

10 days? since when does it take that long? i thought 4-5 working days at the very most.

^^^^ exactly

But couldnt the buyer just potentially wait for the cheque to clear and then disappear? lol

recorded delivery will suffice if you want some security...I.would send normal post ..I take it you have followed the guidelines and are happy that the seller is kosher??

Yes, But that could happen no matter what payment method you choose.

You get more buyer protection using Paypal although not much!

Yes my bank takes that long too, but I'm led to believe that some building societies could take longer. :)

At least you have the sellers Name and Address which is more than you get with Paypal.
A cheque should take a maximum of 5 working days. ASAIK

Yes they could, but from their point of view, they could send the goods and then the cheque could bounce.

True. Just that i dont want to risk sending a cheque of £70 for him to just go away if you know what i mean. I understand he has to wait till the cheque clears thats normal. I wouldnt be so hesitant if it was a low sum but £70 is quite a bit for me anyway lol. He has given me his address with which to send the cheque and asked for mine, do you think that would suffice? I dont really want to put his name out on here cause i havent got anything against him, im just questioning the method etc.

Get his Landline number and call it during the day.
Do they have an ebay account? If so, check it out.
Put their HUKD name in a Google search and see what comes up.

He also said i can send a postal order. Im not really sure how sending one of these works. Does it cost more or is it more secure?

A postal Order will cost you more. It is 'trackable' to a point but is not as good as a Cheque.
If I had a choice between the two, I'd send a Cheque.

You have to pay for postal orders so that'd work out more.

It can take for 4-5 days for the money to become available into your account but the cheque can still "bounce" after that time, usually within 2 weeks, but techinically for many months after.
