Senior Bush figures could be prosecuted for torture, says Obama

President says waterboarding showed US had 'lost moral bearings' as Dick Cheney says CIA memos showed torture delivered 'good' intelligence.

Last week Obama ruled out possibility of CIA torturers being prosecuted, but reveals this week that the attorney general is investigating the possibility of bringing those who formulated the guidelines to account.

I'm surprised a sitting US president has suggested this. Obama rises yet further in my estimation.

Yes, will be interesting to see if anything comes of it. There will be a lot of heavy political pressure from the Republicans - and some dirty tricks no doubt - to get this nipped in the bud before it starts. Hope the AG has the courage to follow through though - might be the only way the US can recover some of that high moral ground they always claim.

p.s. True Blood S2 coming out soon?

Looks like the Obama Administration paying lip service to a certain audience :)

People more cynical you would have said he wouldn't even have suggested it in the first place. Time will tell.

Totally agree, and until there are some assurances that these events will happen then I think people can only perceive it as a PR task for the Obama Administration.

It won't happen, much the same way guantanamo bay is still open and the troops being pulled from iraq are pretty much going straight into afghanistan.

Its all smoke and mirrors from obama much the same way blair told everybody what they wanted to hear but when the detail was scrutinised further most of the time it was left wanting from what was originally said.

I just hope in a year or so I'm either proved wrong and obama has kept his election promises and followed through with his rhetoric or he is taken to task for a string of failed pledges and conning the american voters.

Time will tell.

and i've been keeping an eye out for true blood as it seems most of the tv shows I watch are on the verge of being cancelled. lol

I bet that Obama would give out promised tufty badges. :whistling:

Re torture, I don't imagine for one second that the most senior neo-cons will have to face the music, but it is the correct rhetoric to establish a new, more ethical norm.

True Blood S2 sounds like a computer game - sublimation of the masses, or is that opium?

1. My man Obama don't do no Tufty badges, girlfriend!

2. The correct rhetoric to establish a new, more ethical norm. I like that. You can occasionally say quite impressive stuff, huff-puff.

3. No idea what you're on about. If I told you S2 = Series 2 and it was a vampire show, would that help dispel those images?

1. That's a shame - he could have a world summit to establish normal protocols.

2. From a scientist as well - whatever next???

3. Fair enough; I haven't seen it - perhaps I ought to try and catch the first series somewhre.

there's not alot he is allowed to do at present. anything decent that he suggests regarding the M.E, and the zionist/neo-con lobby is up in arms, further undermining his authority.

unfortunately he's just another - albeit highly articulate and well thought out - puppet.
