Setanta sports - i knew i should have listened to people on here

I recently got a good deal of £5 a month from them for setanata sports which i got purely for the football.

Once the season finished i decided to cancel it, not as easy as i thought. Tried ringing them only to be on hold for about 20 minutes, so in the end i just cancelled my direct debit.

That was that i thought until i got a phone call tonight saying how they couldn't process my direct debit and i owed them £5. So i asked her if i could cancel it there and then only to be told i had to cancel it in writing as in the terms and conditions (yeah, probably hidden away somewhere)

I then asked her when i was paid up to having paid the £5 just to get the thing cancelled, to which she replied "the 28th may"

So they have phoned me up knowing that when i pay the £5 i owed them, there would be no way i could get the letter to them in time and so they will be phoning me for another £5 next month.

Well they can stick it up their *****. They won't get another penny out of me and i won't be getting setanta again

This is exactly what happeed to me. I did the same as you. havent heard anything since. They will not win this in a civil court as it is blatantly underhand

Yeah disgusting, funny how they left it until the day before my subscription would have run out to phone me and tell me i had to write to them to cancel it :x

So you didn't bother reading the Ts&Cs and are now complaining about having to pay £5. Hardly an expensive lesson? :whistling:

I was on £9.99 a month initially then I tried to cancel I then got offered £5 a month i was still gettting charged £9.99 so I phoned up again they offered a further few months at £5 then I checked my statement they took £15. This is a joke a complained and the guy said he would refund me everything and now I check this months statement they took a further £15 arghhhh......

Went crazy at them as they said they couldnt refund me I have to write a letter of complaint and try to get my refund that way... stay well clear!!!!!

Thanks for the input,.

if you actually read what i wrote i'm complaining about not being able to get through to cancel it and then having to Pay £5 and possibly another £5 because of the way they contact people the day before the monthly paymenty is up

I started this thread to warn other people to stay well clear

I'm happy to pay the £9.99pm for Racing UK alone. But if I ever do cancel i'll remember the warning.

theres a sunderland local number for these .... 0191 501 3482

i phoned and cancelled because sunderland were no longer on for this season {this was 2 games before the end}

they then phoned the house phone where my dad answered and the lady said sunderland were live on setanta against arsenal {i knew they werent} but my dad agreed to get it put back on so he could watch the match ! funny enough, there was no sunderland match

rip off's ! they should wear a mask and a stripy jumper

TBH I think it all depends on what you say on the phone when you get through.

I phoned to cancel last week and got through straight away on the 0191 number from saynoto0870, no holding on the line or anything, just straight through to an agent in the cancellations team.

I told them that I wanted to cancel my £5 per month subscription because the football season was over and I did not watch any of the other channels. I was offered an extension of a further 3 months for £5 (instead of going up to £9.99), but I held firm and was eventually offered 3 months free of charge. So that means I now can watch all the World Cup qualifiers and pre season friendlies free of charge.

I will phone back when my free viewing is finished in August to "cancel" again, just to see what they can offer me for the new football season.

i signed up for a free 3 months trial with them as part of a deal when we signed up for Talktalk international. Even though i told the bloke on the phone that no-one in the house was interested in sport, he said "well why don't you try it, and then cancel after the trial" We never even registered the box, but when i cancelled the direct debit (because they ignored my attempts to cancel before the free trial had expired) They suddenly became interested in speaking to me. Their argument for taking out 2 payments was "1 was an advance and the other was a mistake" As it was costing me more in time and effort, i wrote off the 10.00 - put the whole debarcle down to experience and kept the freeview box.

i agree its better value than sky - far better!

Thanks for the warning. Hope they don't give you a bad-credit strike.

I just thought i'd try the saynoto0870 number which was listed to see if i could cancel, after being on hold for 10 minutes i eventually got through. I told the woman i wanted to cancel as i only wanted it for the football. She then told me about all the friendly 's that are coming up in the summer and would i like to keep it, i said no as it was too expensive.

She then offered it to me for £7.50 for 3 months but told her i wasn't interested as i was only paying £5.

She then put me on hold to check with a supervisor to see if i could get it for £5, she cam back on to say she couldn't so i told her to cancel.

She then changed her mind and said just this once i could have it for £5.

Ok fine i said go ahead with that can you send me a new direct debit form to set up, to which she replied i can't you'll have to phone another department (and another 10 minutes on hold probably:x)

So i told her to just cancel it, to which she replied ok i have put a note on your account that you want to cancel but you'll need to send a letter to us to confirm this :x

What a waste of time that was !:?

I have a big problem with Setanta's phone tactics myself, but at the end of the day £9.99pm for all those sport channels really isn't too bad at all. A lot better than Sky Sports, which I abhore.
But if I ever do cancel, they bloody well better not mess me about or i'll take them to trading standards. I'll just send off the letter and expect to be cancelled by the next billing period.

Apologies if this sounds like a stupid question, I've just brought a freeview box with a card slot for the football as they have the FA cup and WC Qualifiers now, and I live away at uni so football through a freeview box, great, but I will try after my one month free to get the price knocked down, however if I did phone up and they got it down to £5 a month, would I myself have to alter my DD details or should setanta do this for me?

Thanks

I agree with you. Most companies want contracts cancelled in writing as per their T&Cs.

just cancelling your DD and thinking that will be end of it is just plain daft.

you can only get a bad credit rating if they decided to pursue you for £9.99 monthly payment which is highly unlikely
i just cancelled my dd couldnt be arsed being stuck on hold if i phoned
