Sex Discrimination by Traders!

Has anyone come across sex discrimation when they are being sold an item?

I had Anglican Windows cold call me and I agree to make an appointment to see what price they would give for new fascia and guttering. They asked to make an appointment when hubby was around so I told him that wasn't an option and they had to deal with me. In the end when I realised being a woman I was obvsiously too dim to deal with this I suggested they didn't come. A few days later a woman called and apologised and suggested she make me an appoitnment for after the summer holidays. This was made and then a low and behold this pratt phones up and says he can't make an apointment without my husband. He was rude and ignorant and in the end I went down to his level!! Consequenty no appointment has been made.

However my hubby wouldn't need his wife to hold his hand and they would see him on is own.

Has anyone else ever had this problem?

So you're saying traders thing women are capable of doing the inside of a house and men only capable of doing the outside. What happens in a gay relationship or when your single?!!!

Its all to do with sexual harassment. they cover themselves in case of any funny goings on. its not personal.

I believe the whole reason they want your husband there is so you cant put them off by saying 'i will need to talk to my partner' as this is usually a way of getting rid of a salesperson and they are trying to limit your ways of declining any sale.

no no no, the carpet fitter was a man, i am a man, my GIRLFRIEND obviously is a woman and we havent changed sex since we were born! I was simply saying the fitter preferred to talk to my girlfriend rather than me, perhaps he fancied her.!!! I was just stating it swings both ways ..:p

I always understood it was because it's so you cant make excuses that you need to ask partner etc

Sounds strange. I've never had a problem personally. There is no one else a trader could deal with anyway since as I live alone.

I experienced pretty much the same thing. I got the feeling they wanted my husband there to secure a sale when all I initially wanted was a rough quote.

I agreed to an appointment when they called at the door whilst doing some work at a neighbours then received a call before the appointment to confirm my husband would be in attendance. Needless to say I cancelled straight away vowing to steer clear of the company when I do go out for quotes.

Just tell them your single and you'll try and have a friend present, dont matter if you dont, if your comfortable having them there on your own
but personally I'd rather have someone with me, male or female just for my own comfort

How do they know you have a husband anyway? What if you say. I don't have one....or we just split up? Or "will my live in lover do"
Or how about if your female and you say " i don't have a husband but i have a wife!" that would stump them!!

Sorry girls, it not a gender thing.

Think of timeshare touts, they don't like singles because it will be more difficult to close a deal. All high pressure sales follow a similar line.

The cleaner asked my dad if there were any females in the villa when we were on holiday, its common practice now not to have members of the opposite sex alone

Hadnt thought of this, but would make sense

I had this ploy from Anglian, and after having the windows fitted, I can say it was more to do with sales than anything else. They really go for the dazzle. Suck up to the guy, charm the lady. You name it, they do it to get your signature on the dotted line. Once the windows are fitted, you are naffed if you have problems. Their after sales service is appaling (or non existant!) We had to go through court in the end!

I wouldn't touch that company with a barge pole.

i reackon they want the wallet-holder there.

i would be careful with doggey sales people. i would use a company that others recommend.

also check with COMPANIES HOUSE how long they have been trading under that name. often doggey companies change their name SLIGHTLY, so those of use not paying attention think that company is good cos its been trading for so long.

Definitely not to do with sexual harassment. I made an appointment for new DG and a slick salesman from Crystal Windows turned up. He checked me out and noticed my wedding ring and asked where Mrs Viking was.
I told him that she was at work. With that he closed up his briefcase and said: "I'm sorry I can't give you a quote because your wife isn't here."

We had words about this and he gave the usual spiel about needing my wife to be happy about the style of windows and the price. In the end I said: "I want a quote for windows now. I have money in the bank to pay for it. If I'm happy with the quote I'll sign tonight. So either give me a quote or f**k off."

With that he got up and left.

A general point: these large double glazing etc companies are very uncompetitive, special offers or not. They have to pay for the cold callers, the advertising and the hours the salesmen/women spend with you. ALWAYS ask local companies. The good ones will have lots of references, and will not try to dazzle you with pseudo-science or high pressure selling.

My neighbour fell for a cold call for a new front door from one of the large companies. She signed on the line for £1200. I told her to cancel, which you have the right to do for the 7-day cooling-off period. She did, and they immediately offered £400 off - which is 30%. Think about it - if they can still profit from that, just how much do they rip you off normally?

I had Everest, Anglian and another national (forget who) all round in the same evening. It was funny as they were queuing up, parked outside in their 4x4s. I told them all beforehand that I wanted no silly "sign now to get discount" deals but two off them offered these nevertheless. They all tried to blind me with silly claims about their windows. By contrast, the local company was cheaper by far, excellent quality (Rehau), responsive, and no silly sales talk at all - he just measured up and posted me a quote. He even said that "self-cleaning" glass would cost me no extra if I wanted it, but was of dubious benefit so I didn't bother.
