seems a ridiculous change to me! Risk should be the determining factor in any insurance.

All that will happen is women pay more for car insurance, men pay the same and insurance companies get richer.

Really gonna hit mens pensions in a bad way too :(
#2
good!
#3
dont believe for one second they will "meet in the middle" unfortunately-everyone will just pay the higher prices,or certain companies will just start refusing to insure young male drivers. Imho, there will be no winners from this tbh.

yes rates for women go up and for men go down hopefully

I think they will bring it down for males for the first year & then in the 2nd year it will go back up.Like the fuel you see going from £1.26 & then the following day it's down to £1.25 & then the following day it's up to £1.29....1 step back 2 steps forward.
#7
not everyone is a good driver regardless of gender, so is fair and tbh will make the insurance companies happy to charge more in the current climate

thats like a petrol station near me, will put its prices at 1.34.9 then for two hours or so stick a sign outside and say look at our prices! and lower them to 124.9. (average for our area)

Sexist?

What about ageist....can young drivers have the same premiums as SAGA insurance offer to their 50 year old members.

Are insurers going to stop discriminating against the honest people why just happen to live in an area of high car crime?

They all take the p*ss. My insurance has gone up 40% this year and 62% the year before! Thats 130% in 2 years! Then they have the cheek to tell me they are giving me 70% discount, when in fact it's less than 25% irrespective of the insurance tax. When you ask them to explain they say the discount is only on the small part of the insurance that is for the driver and the car repair cost and liability parts are fixed.

Rant over :)

If this case wins, the world has gone mad. Its not sexism, its statistics; if it was sexism, it would also be ageism for insurers to charge higher premiums to younger drivers...

I'm all for insurance companies charging the same price for women as men. It is disgusting that women get such discounts because statistically they are the safer drivers.

If insurance companies are too lazy to base their claims on individuals they certainly should not resort to stereotyping.

Sadly the winner will be - the insurance company!

Thank god!

Also, from your link:
Simon Douglas of AA Insurance told BBC News that the decision could add about £400 to the annual cost of car insurance for a young woman.

"Particularly for women under 30 where the difference is most extreme, they currently pay about half what a man would pay," he said.

"We could see their prices go up 25-30% and men's premiums could fall by about 10%."

It's not just Insurance. Having set a precedence in the courts this will eventually also affect forms of discrimination such as life insurance payments and pensions contributions.

Wow those Mayans went to a lot of trouble just to predict when car insurance would change. Could still be the end of the world though, maybe this is what starts it off :)

the voice of reason.

Just wait until the men realise they will now be getting a substantially reduced pension as annuity rates will now be equalised in favour of the women.

Why shouldn't they be?

Also, this IS sexism. Insurance companies are not basing the costs on an individual basis. They are merely assuming that a female is safer than a male.

For example, they may charge me more for insurance than DLM (obviously I am younger which is something else to take into consideration) despite her being 20x more likely to cause an accident.

I'll infer from your love of statistics to make policy decisions that you'd be fine with full DNA testing to determine your health insurance?

I have 15 year's experience and I haven't had an accident for over 10 year's which was a minor bump.

how can they possibly base every premium on an individual basis? The premiums would quadruple if they tried that approach as every driver would have to some kind of test by each insurer

the premiums are based on risk and have been for centuries. Its mad I tell ya.

The requirement for unisex insurance premium and benefits will start on 21 December 2012, giving national governments and the European insurance industry time to adjust.

If everyone took their test every, say five, years, then you really could judge it on how good/bad a driver is. The added bonus being that you'd take the idiots off the road at the same time.

If anyone thinks this is a good move, they are stupid.

Insurance companies will spread the increased risk across all policies. Peoples premiums will go up as a whole not down. No discounts for having your OH as an additional driver, etc, etc.

All that will happen is more people will have to pay more, as other risks are "evened" out., more people won't be able to have car insurance.

Anyone who can think beyond the age of 25, will also realise this is bad news for pensions, life ins, etc, etc.

The only people who will win here are the insurers gt'ed.

Oh really, then how is it that the Insurance Business in the UK is worth 940 Billion and is the 3rd Largest in the world and the UK is not even in the top 10 of largest populated countries in the world. So by that we pay more insurance per head than almost any other country in the world and deaths caused by car accidents have halved since 1980, with 70% of your premium going to admin fees and the other 30% going to third party claims.
