shattered back of iphone 4 :( - fixable???

Hello all

Just looking for some advice here. My gf, silly sod, managed to drop her iphone 4 and shattered the back of the screen. I've called up apple and they say all they can do is replace the phone which seems mightily stupid when it works well, just doesn't look perfect!

Anyway, I've seen fixing kits on ebay for like a tenner where you just replace the back of the phone with a new glass part. Has anyone bought these? do they look out of place or cheapo or whatever?
I remember buying a new casing for my k850 a few years back and it looked dreadful and properly budget!
Just wanna know what to expect if I fix it this way....

Cheers guys :)

How much did apple want to replace the phone?

It would void your warranty if you was to do it, it is either an apple repair or an inusrance claim

Because they have a warranty on a smashed to bits phone.

Don't even start!!! The phone isn't smashed to bits, just the back looks a little f'ed. other than that, it works perfectly.
I rang up apple earlier to ask if they could do anything for this purely cosmetic issue and they had the gall to tell me that my warranty is now void!
I then asked what if it had a software issue?! that wouldn't be down to it falling would it!!! And she was like "oh we'd take that on board and decide if it affected the damage". What a load of tripe. reminds me of 3 mobile in their heyday when ANY faulty phone was sent to them, it was always "water damaged"....!!

Apple wanted £139 to replace the phone. but as i said, the phone works, just the back is rubbish and broken. The back replacement stuff online looks to be MUCH cheaper.... starting from a tenner delivered. my only concern is will it look like appley goodness or cheap chinese tat..... my money's on the latter but I really hope not!!!

I've looking online if this voids warranty but no-one seems to know.... I mean theoretically, you're not opening up the circuit boards or anything electronic..... nothing worse than the impact of it dropping would be damaged..... :s

If you want to be Apple's bitch you can't really moan (joke, to be fair any manufacturer would say the same, significant cosmetic damage voids warranty as it's been treated in a manner other than how it was designed to be).

Anyway should be fairly cheap and easy to do from ebay, just check out the feedback and see if anyone moaned about build quality.

Sounds like solid advice, I'll do that.
just worried as the last load of tat I bought had gleaming feedback too.....

I know any manufacturer would say the same but to say warranty is void just sounds like BS. I mean obviously if it falls to pieces, then can't blame those in california. but if its a software issue I can't see how a knock would effect that!

And some (like me) might say making the back out of glass in the first place is pure idiocy....!!

Just take it to a apple store and make up a problem with the phone and see if your lucky enough to have you phone replaced free of cost.

sounds like an idea.... But I think gf has it insured so cost less of a problem. Just annoyed by the hassle and the fact that its just one small part of it that is less than optimal.

Also, I think any HW problem I could think of is just gonna be blamed on the fall anyway.

you would think they would blame it on the fall, some of them just cant be bothered and just replace it without even actually checking just go when its busy as they hate to
make customers wait

Is that 100% true? If so, I'd be bloody well pleased! a lot less hassle than replacing the entire phone!!

Have you done this yourself?
#15
Not personally
But alot of people on forums I use have.

Apple will charge you £146.41 to replace a new one, not £25

Not talking about a replacement but a repair. Just to replace the back, not the entire handset!

If I was you I would pay that, when you come to sell the phone you wouldn't get as much with a knock off back. Maybe even £130 less

Just what I'd do

Was the process easy? How does the back look? genuine?
Did you buy a complete back or just the glass back?
